Rafael Nadal created history by winning his 21st Grand Slam title at the Australian Open 2022. The Spaniard became the first man in the Open Era to achieve this feat. The whole world celebrated his win, with wishes pouring in from all corners. His fellow players took to their social media handles, wishing Nadal on reaching this milestone. 

Even though the champion received a number of wishes, it was his long-time rival, Roger Federer, whose wish caught the most attention. The Swiss took to his Instagram account and posted a congratulatory story for Nadal.

Rafael Nadal pours out his heart for Federer 

Talking to Swiss TV, Nadal responded to Federer’s heartfelt message. The story had Nadal’s winning photo, along with a long message for the 2-time Australian Open champion.

Reacting to the message, Rafael Nadal said, “It means a lot to me. We have an amazing relationship, we did amazing things together. For me it’s a great honour to be part of his era. Together we enjoyed, we lived amazing moments of the history of our sport. Receiving a message like this from him means a lot to me. I wish well. I really hope that we’ll be able to play again in an important status.”

Nadal was also wished by his other long-time rival, Novak Djokovic.

Federer’s message for Nadal

Federer-Nadal rivalry is often regarded as one of the biggest sporting rivalries in the world. The two have faced each other 40-times in their careers. However, despite being on-court competitors, the two share a warm and a friendly bond with each other off court. 

When Nadal won his 21st Grand Slam, Federer posted a warm message for Nadal on his Instagram, which read, “Never underestimate a great champion. Your incredible work ethic, dedication, and fighting spirit are an inspiration to me and countless others around the world. I am proud to share this era with you and honored to play a role in pushing you to achieve more, as you have done for me for the past 18 years.”

Federer underwent a knee procedure after Wimbledon 2021, which made him withdraw from the remaining 2021 season. Fans are hopeful that they’ll get to witness another Nadal vs Federer clash this year.
