In the dazzling world of professional tennis, where victories are celebrated and rivalries are intense, there’s a side we rarely see. It’s the side where players become friends, even amidst fierce competition. In one of his first interviews in the recent past, Rafael Nadal opened up about his unique relationships with two other tennis legends, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer.

While Nadal is yet to return to professional tennis after his painstakingly long hiatus due to a tedious hip injury, he opened up about his tennis friendship dynamics with the 2/3rd of the Big Three. While Federer remains his go-to person even post the latter’s retirement, he shares a keen understanding of his other rival as well.

In his first major interview after taking a break because of injuries, Nadal didn’t hold back when discussing Djokovic’s impressive Grand Slam record. While a snippet of the interview hinted at this conversation, the full interview revealed a more interesting story, including Nadal admitting that he hasn’t yet congratulated Djokovic on his incredible achievements.

According to Bola Amarela, Nadal stated candidly, “The truth is that I haven’t sent any message to Djokovic yet out of pure ignorance. When you win something so important, from experience I know it’s better to take the time to appreciate that message. I’ll send it but I haven’t done it yet. Of course I sent messages to Alcaraz when he won or when he was about to win. The others… on the circuit I don’t have many friends left; I’m from another generation. I talk to Federer every now and then” (Translated by Google).

Nadal’s candid confessions on Novak Djokovic’s career trajectory

Djokovic’s triumphant 2023 campaign saw him clinch three Major titles – the Australian Open, French Open, and US Open, bringing his total Grand Slam tally to a staggering 24. This record is higher than any man in the history of the ATP and is equal to Margaret Court’s Grand Slam titles. The Serb tied with Nadal at 22 Grand Slam titles in Melbourne before surpassing him in Paris. Djokovic’s remarkable achievement of winning 12 Grand Slam titles after turning 30 has solidified his place in tennis history.

In contrast, Nadal, who is a year older than Djokovic, acknowledged the difference in their career trajectories. “I missed four and a half years of Grand Slams due to injury… That’s not why I’m better than Djokovic because I played less. He had a physique and a way of playing that allowed him to compete more than me,” Nadal explained.
