In sports, friendship and rivalry can coexist, as witnessed by the close bond between Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer. Back in 2022, the Swiss maestro decided to put down his racket after playing his farewell match at the Laver Cup alongside his arch-rival and friend, Nadal. Now that the Spaniard himself is in the twilight of his competitive journey, there have been rumors of a ‘Fedal’ reunion, which is being speculated as Nadal’s last dance on the court. Reacting to the same, the American tennis veteran Andy Roddick recently issued his honest take.

In the latest episode of the Served with Andy Roddick podcast show, the former US Open champion was asked if he thinks Rafael Nadal will also play his farewell match alongside Roger Federer, given their close friendship. Roddick answered by saying, “I mean, I don’t know, we are guessing. So I have zero, I say something in this show that is normally they are based on in some sort of conversation, experience, knowing the characters we are talking about, knowing their instincts, knowing what makes them tick.”

While brushing aside all such speculations, the former tennis ace also opened up about how he wouldn’t be surprised if a Fedal reunion would happen at this season’s Laver Cup. He said, “This is pure bullsh*t fandom speculation that we are having right now. I wouldn’t bet on it, also it wouldn’t be the most shocking thing I have ever seen in the history of the world. I don’t think it will happen, but you don’t know.”

Even though he is not sure of a Federer and Nadal matchup, Roddick went on to talk about how the Spaniard could also team up with other ATP colleagues, including Novak Djokovic and Carlos Alcaraz.

Nadal and Djokovic have faced each other in 58 matches, while the Spaniard and Federer have squared off against each other 40 times on the tour. Notably, during the same conversation, Roddick opened up about how Rafa might team up with the “Djoker’ for his last dance on the court. He said, “I think it makes more likely, or is it Novak? They have played more times than Rafa and Roger have.”

The former tennis player further speculated that Nadal’s farewell match might also turn out to be an ‘official passing of the torch’ to his compatriot, Carlos Alcaraz. He added, “Is it an official passing of the torch to Alcaraz, is he the partner? He is already signed up.” What do you think of all the speculations surrounding a Fedal reunion this season’s Laver Cup? Let us know in the comments section.
