We know John McEnroe as one of the most enigmatic and vibrant players to play in the history of tennis. The player never subjected himself to the conventional standard of sophistication that the game portrayed. He said what he wanted to say and rebelled against his opponents and questioned umpires’ decisions.

However, the player had opened up about his intrinsic nature of being shy in an old interview. Moreover, he expressed his views on the change in the sport’s image.

John McEnroe opened up about his change in nature after he turned pro

John McEnroe denied considering his aggression and outbursts on the court as an act. Addressing his unfiltered nature on the court, he said, “Believe it or not, I was a pretty shy youngster growing up.”

He opened up about the time when he realized how pro was different from juniors tennis. He said, “I guess the cat was out of the bag when they said, ‘Hey there’s umpires and you can question calls.‘”

McEnroe recalled how juniors did not have umpires and how their presence changed his outlook on the game. He said, “I saw guys I learned a lot from, like Connors and (Ilie) Nastase.” Both the players are former world no. 1 and they did not restrict themselves from bringing out their true emotions on the court.

The seven-time grand slam champion did not like the rebellion against the tennis players who were conforming to the set standard of tennis. He wanted to change the perspective of the audience toward the players. He said, “We wanted to be considered the way athletes in other sports were.”

John McEnroe’s row at the 1981 Wimbledon set a precedent in the history of tennis. He had had one of the angriest outbursts as a player. In the incumbent situation, we have players like Nick Kyrgios and Alexander Zverev who are very honest with their frustration during the matches.
