Rafael Nadal is no stranger to injury setbacks. However, on several occasions, the Spaniard has overcome these setbacks to achieve success in his tennis career. Recently, during the Wimbledon Championships 2022, the former World Number 1 suffered an abdominal injury that forced him to withdraw from the tournament. He was due to face Nick Kyrgios in the semifinals but pulled out of the clash and the Australian received a walkover into the finals.

Nadal held a press conference to provide this grim update. Following his withdrawal, he returned to his native country, where he talked about his latest injury setback.

Rafael Nadal hopes to come back stronger

During an interview upon his arrival in Barcelona, Nadal talked about his physical problems. He said, “We are controlling the calendar a lot, doing things in the best way possible to avoid things. I am 36 years old and I am almost 20 years of professional career. I have lived with problems, physical problems is a reality, but during those physical problems that I have had not prevented me. (I) can never continue to maintain the illusion and also competitiveness, right?”

Further, he added, “And to maintain a high level during all these years and in that sense. Well, I’m calm, I’m not worried much more about foot care than this is an unfortunate situation, unpleasant and good in a moment that was not the right one but there is nothing left but to accept and look the future with hope.”

Earlier this year too, Nadal has been troubled with injuries. He suffered a rib injury during the ATP 1000 tournament in Indian Wells. Further, he was also affected by a foot problem during the Rome Masters and continued to play with the same during the French Open.

Nadal rises in the ATP rankings

Following the Wimbledon Championships, Djokovic slipped four spots as ranking points weren’t on offer at this year’s tournament. However, Djokovic’s loss was Nadal’s gain as it helped the Spaniard move up a spot to the third position.
