According to many, the match was practically over after Medvedev took the first two sets. However, Nadal had something else up his sleeve, as he made a miraculous comeback to win three back-to-back sets.

After winning the final, Rafa became the first man with 21 Grand Slam singles titles to his name. Incidentally, Nadal’s record-breaking win over the Russian created havoc on social media. Particularly, on Twitter, Nadal’s win generated over one billion impressions.

Nadal’s record-breaking win in Australia

Before the Australian Open, Daniil Medvedev was the heavy favorite to win the tournament, with or without Novak Djokovic. However, after Djokovic’s departure from Australia, Nadal became the second favorite. The Spaniard looked down and out in the first two sets against Medvedev. But Nadal’s fighting spirit and mental toughness did not let him give up.

In the end, after 5 hours and 24 minutes of relentless battle, Nadal clinched his second Australian Open title and became the only person with 21 Grand Slam singles titles.

This win was significant for Nadal, especially after suffering a foot injury last year. He was on crutches for the most part of 2021 and wasn’t even sure about taking part in the Australian Open. It turned out that his decision was the right one as he now holds the Australian Open Trophy.
