At the US Open this year, Nadal, who is ranked third in the ATP ranking, was close to winning the 23rd Grand Slam of his career but was defeated by Frances Tiafoe. The Spanish national, who is fluent in Catalan, was raised on the Balearic island of Mallorca.
Rafael Nadal once spoke about Catalonia’s proposal
Nadal has always been vocal about his choices, and what he thinks is right. But he never fails to show his support to his country or his countrymen. The 22-time Grand Slam champion once talked against Catalonia’s choice for independence. He said, ?The laws are what they are and one can?t skip the laws because you want to skip them.?
Nadal, who was raised with the Catalans, talked about how Spain is incomplete without the Catalans. He continued by talking about the same and said, ?I feel very close to the Catalans and I feel very Spanish as well. I don?t understand Spain without Catalonia. I don?t want to understand or see it. Spain is better with Catalonia and Catalonia is better with Spain from my point of view.?

He presented a solid argument, but the vote went ahead despite Nadal?s pleas, and the proposal was not accepted by the government.

Nadal had a spectacular season
On his way to achieving an all-time high of 22 Grand Slams, Nadal won the Australian Open and the French Open. This season, Nadal won both the hard-court and clay-court Grand Slams. He also advanced to the Wimbledon semifinals before withdrawing from his match against Nick Kyrgios due to an abdominal injury.

The World number three hadn’t lost a match in a major going into the US Open. Nadal fans were hoping for his 23rd grand slam title in Flushing Meadows, but things didn?t go as planned.
