Does Djokovic's spontaneity make him the true GOAT, or do Federer and Nadal still reign supreme?

Despite Roger Federer’s retirement 2 years back and Rafael Nadal nearing his retirement, the GOAT debate looks far from settled. The duo, along with Novak Djokovic, are still a talking point among tennis bigwigs and fans, who have varied perspectives on this matter. While some consider the trophies won, others talk about the influence on the sport to settle the GOAT debate. However, Juan Martin del Potro had an altogether different perspective on this subject.

The Argentine legend was involved in an interview with La Nacion during which he compared the three legends of the sport. Although del Potro admitted that the trio had unique styles, there was one peculiar characteristic that put Djokovic on top of the other two.

Revealing this trait, he said, “They are different, but I can say that Novak is very real, he is very close to any player regardless of the ranking. The others too. Roger and Rafa are super correct, very nice and respectful with everyone, but he maybe got involved in some more way and is a very spontaneous guy.”

Further, Del Petro went on to add, “What comes to his mind he carries it out, perhaps without thinking about whether it is right or not to do it. And that naturalness that he has surpasses his personality. If he thought 24 hours a day who he is, what it means for the world of sports, maybe he wouldn’t have that spontaneity in a lot of attitudes.”

Moreover, Djokovic’s consistency during his prime days in the sport has been second to none. He dominated men’s tennis year after year and is in the history book for most of the records.

But del Potro isn’t the only one who has Djokovic recently. Even the Serb’s ex-coach, Marian Vajda spoke about Djokovic’s greatness.

Vajda began working with Djokovic right from his teenage days and he saw Djokovic’s rise in the tennis world closely. Despite seeing the Serb dominate men’s tennis, Vajda revealed that he never imagined that Djokovic would be the greatest of all time. During an interview, the legendary coach described his time working with Djokovic.

He said, “Of course, all this is much more than a number. I look at my cooperation with Novak as a process. Of course, when I met him, he was very young and had nothing but confidence. He told me: ‘Maran, I’m going to be tennis number one.’ When we started working, I thought it couldn’t get any better. He is the best player who could have deserved it, and it was just amazing.”

While the 2024 season may not have gone exactly according to Djokovic’s plans, he achieved his dream of winning an Olympic gold medal. Moreover, at 37, he doesn’t have many years left in his career. Thus, the upcoming season could potentially be the final one of Djokovic’s illustrious career. Do you agree? Let us know in the comments below.
