Will Andy Murray's coaching be the secret weapon Djokovic needs for his 25th Grand Slam victory?

We’re almost one month away from Christmas Day! What’s your wish for Christmas this year? Talking about wishes, well a few sets of tennis fans got their Christmas gift pretty early this year. Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic recently made a surprising inclusion to his team ahead of the 2025 AO. He has now appointed his long-time rival and friend, Andy Murray as his coach for the 2025 AO! Now, after hearing about this new partnership in the tennis world, a former ATP pro has come up with a new wish for Christmas! What is his wish, though?

With Rafael Nadal’s recent retirement from the racquet sport, the tennis world has already started to miss his magical presence on the court and his rivalry with the other three in the ‘Big 4.’ Roger Federer took retirement from the sport on the 23rd September 2022 and then on 1 August 2024 we saw yet another tennis legend (Andy Murray) deciding to hang up his racquet. So, there remains only Novak Djokovic, who would now be responsible for carrying forward their legacy for at least a few more years. However, Australian former pro, John Millman recently made a bold wish, hoping to see Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal making a return to the tour as coaches.

He recently tweeted, “For Christmas, all I want is Roger and Rafa to announce they have also picked up a coaching gig and are returning to the tour!! Can this happen!!?” Millman also attached a GIF along with this tweet, which read, “Please, Please, Please.” Will his Christmas wish be fulfilled? Time will tell! However, previously we have seen Andy Murray hinting at a future in coaching and everyone might have expected him to work with youngsters like, Jack Draper. However, this move was like a bolt from the blue. Literally, no one expected this to happen so soon.

However, this isn’t the first time that we have seen Millman reflecting his love and respect for these legends of the game. Previously in 2020, he raised a question to all the ‘Big 3’ fans. He asked them, “Why are there some fans out there who can’t appreciate the big three in their entirety? Instead, they have their favorite and go ahead and attack the other two? I’m genuinely interested as to why this is the case? Well, that’s quite a good question, though! However, the ‘Fedal’ rivalry in particular, still remains one of the fiercest rivalries in the sporting world.

Have Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal ever spoken about coaching before? In 2013, Rafael Nadal who has been coached mostly by his uncle Toni, claimed that he doesn’t need a tennis legend to guide him on the Tour. He said, “I think coaching tennis is not a big deal…In my case, I never needed a former champion to be my coach.” Then in September this year, we heard Roger Federer say, “My biggest advice I could give to the juniors is that you have to remember that you are 50% the coach as well.” We don’t know whether they’d ever take up this role in the future or not, but what was Andy Murray‘s reaction to getting the chance to work with Novak Djokovic?

Even Andy Murray expressed his excitement on the same by saying, “I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals.” Apart from winning the gold medal in the singles event at the Paris Olympics, Novak Djokovic’s season has been pretty much ordinary if compared to his usual standards. Can Andy Murray now help the Serb clinch his 25th Grand Slam title at the 2025 AO, itself?

Well, according to tennis insider, David Law, this collaboration will now make Novak Djokovic a serious title threat at the 2025 AO!
