He even congratulated Lionel Messi when they won the FIFA World Cup in 2022. So, with time, he has managed to build quite a few fan bases in that part of the world as well. Del Potro is the only man other than the ‘Big Three’ to win a major title between the 2005 AO and the 2012 US Open. His biggest achievement was winning the 2009 US Open singles title, where he defeated Rafael Nadal in the SF and Roger Federer in the final. So, during his days, he was truly a force to reckon with in the men’s tour. During the 2018 US Open, Djokovic called Del Potro, a “gentle giant“. He further added, “He really is. He’s very tall, has a big game, but at the same time he nurtures the right values in life. He cares about his family. He cares about his friends. He respects everyone.“
Djokovic said, “He (Del Potro) fights every match from the first to the last point. I think people can relate to that and appreciate what he brings to tennis. He treats others the way he wants others to treat him. I think that’s why people love him.” Some of the fans feel the Argentinian couldn’t have asked more out of his farewell match. “What a pair of legendary cracks. Delpo deserves nothing less for his farewell,” said another fan. Share your thoughts on this epic exhibition match. Are you excited about this match just like these fans?
