Andy Roddick is known for his candid takes and he seems to be stirring the pot once again, but what’s the source of the brewing controversy? Well, Novak Djokovic’s sensational win at the Davis Cup over Greek player Ioannis Xilas. The Serbian Maestro baffled the Greek in straight sets 6-0, 6-1. In the process, he converted five of his seven break points to finish the match in only 45 minutes. But what followed after Djokovic’s victory was Roddick’s subtle dig at the amateur players who claimed in a poll that they could effectively take on several professional players like Djokovic.
Taking to X, Roddick shared a link to the article detailing Djokovic’s win and then took a jibe at the amateur players. “Do we remember that poll that said something like the majority of club players said that they could win a game ??? In a survey carried out by Research Without Barriers, in June 2023, 71% of the 2403 American budding tennis players, who participated in the survey, claimed that they could win at least one game against the tennis greats if they faced them on the court.

Interestingly, self-belief was more dominant in the female tennis players with 72% of them believing in their abilities to win a game against the pro players. The young players between the age range of 18 to 24 were even more confident as 82% claimed to win a game off a professional tennis player. However, this survey on American players drew a lot of flak from the tennis community. Roddick himself talked about it last year itself.

Responding to the survey back in 2023, Roddick wrote on X, “This is insane.” In yet another post, he wrote, “I would lose 6-0, 6-0 to Novak right now. I doubt my neighbor Bill would do better.” Meanwhile, Djokovic himself made a tongue-in-cheek remark about his Greek opponent after the Davis Cup match.

Novak Djokovic demonstrated total brilliance on the court against Ioannis Xilas. The match looked lop-sided throughout and several spectators even questioned if Djokovic lost that one game deliberately against the young star. In fact, a reporter asked this question to Nole directly, to which the Serb gave a tongue-in-cheek response.

Answering the question, Djokovic said, “I can’t answer anything, I don’t know what you’re talking about,” he joked with a smile. The 37-year-old, however, seemed to like the idea of playing around and therefore decided to take the conversation forward. “Towards the end, it was strange, but I’m not going to tell you if I gave up or not, he won the game with a beautiful ace and he was happy,” he added.
For now, it will be interesting to see if Djokovic continues his dominance at the Davis Cup and ousts more players to help his team advance. The young, inexperienced players are bound to struggle against the Serb, as Xilas found out during the 45-minute encounter.
