Can Nick Kyrgios's comeback be the spark tennis needs, or is it just another false dawn?

Fans weren’t sure whether Nick Kyrgios would bless the crowd with his entertaining performances ever again after enduring an injury-plagued phase for almost two years. However, the Aussie came atop such concerns and recently revealed upcoming attendance at the Brisbane International. With big plans for 2025, Kyrgios explained how Novak Djokovic played a crucial part in motivating him for a long-drawn comeback.

The ‘bad boy of tennis’ marked his last tour-level attendance at the Stuttgart Open and since then, has been largely involved in commentating gigs. Despite playing in exhibitions and charity events, return to his professional commitments seemed skeptical, until, he aired an exciting update. “It was a 15 miracle percent chance that I was going to get back to playing at this level and here we are. To get back out there in front of the home fans is going to be sick,” revealed Kyrgios, who also expressed his intentions of playing in the Australian Open.

With just over a month left for his highly-anticipated comeback, the former World No. 13 hopped on ‘The AO Show’ and touched down on a variety of topics. Things got a bit more intriguing when he dropped his candid admission of how Djokovic reignited his passion. The Aussie explained that he received optimistic feedback from Nole after the duo practiced at Wimbledon, three days before the Serbian launched his title quest. Seeing as the Serb’s comments twinned with what Kyrgios’s team felt, the Aussie decided it was about time he returned.

He said, “I was only starting to serve then. And then he was like, it doesn’t look like you’ve had surgery, you’re moving well, you’re playing well. And that’s how I looked at my team. I was like, okay, maybe we can return. And six months later, here we are. That was probably the turning moment when Novak said that.” For those unaware, the duo’s bromance trended online after making waves during their 2022 SW19 final encounter.

Moreover, in the same interview, the 29-year-old did not refrain from talking about his other interests. One of them notably included his dream mixed doubles partners line-up, years after he joined forces with the Williams sisters.

Nick Kyrgios wishes to partner with countrywoman Ash Barty for a mixed doubles blockbuster

The tennis world was stunned after Australian superstar Nick Kyrgios first joined forces with Serena Williams, the youngest of the Williams sisters. Although his experience playing with the WTA legend wasn’t that pretty, the Aussie decided to partner with her elder sister Venus Williams at Wimbledon. And the outcome was modest.

Have an interesting take?

After winning the event’s opener and entertaining fans with their thrilling performance, Kyrgios has expressed his desire to team up with compatriot Ash Barty. In the same podcast, he heaped praises on the former World No. 1 and noted that she was “by far one of the most talented female players to ever play the game. We would have done some damage on the court for sure.” Unfortunately, it’s quite hard to manifest such dreams knowing that Barty retired from the sport in 2022.

While it is clear that Kyrgios is trying to figure out an agenda for 2025, his diehard fans are counting the days before he takes to the Brisbane International. The Aussie will likely be granted a wildcard owing to his protected ranking on the ATP.
