Patriotism seems to be at an all-time high for Lorenzo Musetti at Roland Garros. As the young Italian star braces himself to play against legendary Novak Djokovic in the third round, he’s on a mission to aid his fellow countryman, Jannik Sinner, in overtaking Djokovic. Musetti and Djokovic have clashed in some of the most intense matches, but this upcoming showdown is likely to outdo them all, and here’s why!

With the tournament entering the third round, the battle for the top position has intensified. The match between Musetti and Djokovic is crucial not only for the two players but also for Jannik Sinner, who could seize the World No. 1 spot if Djokovic loses. Musetti offered some hope to his fellow countryman in the post-match interview, after winning round 2, stating, “Against Djokovic, I will also try to help Sinner for No. 1.”

Sinner is currently ranked No. 2 in the ATP Rankings and has a strong chance of dethroning Djokovic if things go his way. However, he cautioned Sinner not to rely too heavily on him: “I wish him not to place his hopes on me. He has his own path I think it is already well-written but if I can give him a hand, even a little. Patriotism doesn’t hurt.”

With Sinner inching closer to the World Number 1 title, a halt to Djokovic’s ongoing streak is crucial for him. Conversely, Djokovic needs to secure at least a spot in the finals and hope for Sinner’s elimination before that stage. Should both players reach the finals, Sinner would surpass Djokovic in the ATP Rankings, regardless of Djokovic defending his title. This is due to the reduction of 2000 points for Djokovic compared to Sinner’s 45 points earned from their Roland Garros venture last year, where Djokovic clinched the title and Sinner faced an early exit.

Novak Djokovic and Lorenzo Musetti have crossed paths five times so far. While the 24-time Grand Slam champion has claimed victory in four of those encounters, he’s encountered significant challenges on clay. In a Roland Garros debut for the ages, a then 19-year-old unseeded Musetti stunned the world in 2021. He pushed the No. 1 seed, Djokovic, to the brink, leading by two sets before retiring in the fourth round.

Similarly at 2023 Monte-Carlo, a sensational upset unfolded. Rising star Lorenzo Musetti toppled world No. 1 Novak Djokovic in a thrilling three-set battle (4-6, 7-5, 6-4). This victory propels Musetti into the quarterfinals of the prestigious ATP Masters 1000 event. “I don’t think I am still at my top level but it was a great test today against a great player, a very talented player,” Djokovic said. “I lost to him last year here, similar circumstances…” said the World No. 1 per ATPTour.com. It was just a matter of a year and Djokovic took his revenge!

Djokovic shook off rust for Monte-Carlo revenge this year! Despite moments of sluggishness and unforced errors, Novak Djokovic found his rhythm when it mattered most. The top-ranked Serb exacted revenge on Lorenzo Musetti, who stunned him last year, with a clutch performance in the Quarterfinals. Converting five of six break points, Djokovic cruised to a confidence-boosting 7-5, 6-3 victory.

As for the ongoing French Open, both Djokovic and Musetti have showcased impressive performances in their first two rounds. They effortlessly dispatched their opponents in straight sets to advance to the third round. Now, facing Djokovic again, Musetti will need another upset if he wants to repeat his best Roland Garros performance. Despite Djokovic maintaining an upper hand over Musetti, both players have consistently expressed high regard for each other in the past.

When Djokovic and Musetti were all praises for each other!

Lorenzo Musetti has engaged in some of his most exhilarating matches against Djokovic and has gained insights from the tennis legend. Prior to their match in Monte-Carlo in April this year, Musetti openly acknowledged the learning opportunities presented by facing “a champion like Nole.” He stated, “It will be a lesson, for sure, in both ways. Playing against a champion like Nole, there is always something to learn and to, you know, to take,” expressing his anticipation.

Similarly, the 98-time tour-level titlist regarded Musetti as a young talent of remarkable skill. Djokovic acknowledged, “He obviously is, you know, one of the most talented players on clay, a beautiful one-handed backhand.” He further praised Musetti, saying that he is one of the most talented young players not only from Italy but from across the world.

As both players prepare to battle in the third round, it promises to be an exciting match to witness. The outcome will be intriguing to see, whether Djokovic maintains his momentum or if Musetti can assist his fellow countryman in becoming the World Number 1.
