“I am feeling fit and healthy, and I am excited for my return to tennis following some time out of the sport,” said Kyrgios. So, fasten your seatbelts for the mix of class and flamboyance once these two hits the court partnering with each other in Brisbane. The tournament will be held from December 29 to January 5. Interestingly, this will also be Novak Djokovic’s first appearance at this tournament since 2009. Let’s now check out what are the fans seeing about this possible partnership between Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic in Brisbane.
Fans taking a jibe at Novak Djokovic for teaming up with Nick Kyrgios at the Brisbane International
Nick Kyrgios and Novak Djokovic were once sworn enemies in the tennis world, but that relationship has now thawed into a flourishing bromance in the last few years. In 2019, during a conversation at the No Challenges Remaining podcast, Nick Kyrgios said, “I just feel like he (Djokovic) has a sick obsession with wanting to be liked.” Not only that, Kyrgios further added, “He just wants to be like Roger [Federer]. This whole celebration thing that he does after matches, it’s like so cringeworthy. It’s very cringeworthy.” So, after seeing all these things in the past and now watching Novak Djokovic teaming up with him, some of the fans tweeted, “Nole’s wrong decision…🫣.“
Not only that, even in 2020 during an IG Live talk with Novak Djokovic’s current coach, Andy Murray, Nick Kyrgios said, “I’m not going to make this controversial, but I honestly think you’re better than Djokovic.” Fans question, how can Novak Djokovic team up with a guy who had commented like this about him in the past? “How does Novak have the worst judgement when it comes to people? Look at the people he supports. Tells you everything about him as a person,” wrote the other fan.
However, despite these controversial remarks, we saw a drastic change in their relationship when Nick Kyrgios offered strong support for Novak Djokovic when he was initially allowed to enter Melbourne for the 2022 AO, only to have his VISA rejected as he was deported a few days later. Recalling that moment, we saw Novak Djokovic say, “You were one of the very few colleagues on the tour to use his platform, use his voice, to support me (during the deportation) and that is something I will never forget.”

So, that was the time when their relationship started to get better. Despite admitting the strong bond between each other in the last few years, fans aren’t too pleased to see Novak Djokovic teaming with the Aussie. A fan wrote, “It’s sad that Djokovic has been seduced by this clown into aiding his attention-seeking.” Nick Kyrgios has been facing quite a few backlashes from the fans in the last few weeks for his controversial comments on Jannik Sinner’s doping saga, and perhaps those comments have now had a negative impact on this partnership.
Previously we heard, Nick Kyrgios calling the Jannik Sinner development “ridiculous” and he even demanded the world number one to be suspended for “2 years” after he failed multiple dope tests. However, he didn’t stop there and the Aussie has been seen taking a constant jibe at the Italian on this incident. Some of the fans aren’t too pleased with the comments he has made on Sinner in the last few months. Perhaps, a fan wanted to vent out the anger on Kyrgios by commenting, “Djokovic is teaming up with a guy who has spread lies and misinformation about the current World No 1.“
During an interview at the 2024 AO, Novak Djokovic told Nick Kyrgios, “You’ve got to promise me something … recover quick, come back to the tour before I retire and we’ve got to play doubles.” After that, we saw Kyrgios revealing a pep talk from the 24-time Grand Slam champion which further motivated him to make a comeback.

What did Djokovic say to Kyrgios at that time? Well, the Aussie revealed, “I was hitting with Novak, and when he said to me, ‘it doesn’t look like you’ve had surgery’, and that was a big motivation to say like maybe I’m actually making some inroads, and some progress into getting back because I didn’t really know.” It further encouraged him to push further for a strong comeback. However, after seeing the Serb’s possible chances of teaming with the Aussie some of the fans wrote, “So Djokovic, one of the all-time greats, teams up with one of the all-time failures. For attention. Respect lost.” What are your thoughts on this partnership, though?
