Novak Djokovic began his ATP Finals 2020 campaign in style. The World No.1 thrashed Diego Schwartzman in straight sets in his first match. Djokovic looked in great form after his shocking exit from the recently concluded Vienna Open 2020 and never gave Schwartzman a chance in the game. The final scoreline of the match was 6-3, 6-2.

What is even more intriguing for Novak is that he set a new record with this win. The Serbian player has surpassed tennis legend Boris Becker in terms of wins at the ATP Finals.

It was his 37th win at the tournament, placing him in the third position behind Roger Federer (59) and Ivan Lendl (39). If Novak Djokovic wins the title by winning his next two matches, he’ll level Lendl’s record as well. Thus, the World No.1 will be second on the list of all-time wins leaders at the ATP Finals.

There is another incredible record after Djokovic’s name at the O2 arena- the official venue of the ATP Finals. The 17-time Grand Slam winner has not lost even once in any of his first-round robin matches at the venue. He has played eleven such matches so far and won all of them.

What’s even more astonishing is the fact that in these eleven matches, Djoker has faced ten different opponents. Thus, it is incorrect to assume that first-round matches are easy and less competitive, especially when they were against the likes of Roger Federer, Diego Schwartzman, and Dominic Thiem.

Novak Djokovic will now face either Daniil Medvedev or Alexander Zverev in the next round of the tournament. He will surely want to cruise through and enter the finals. If he wins the ATP Finals 2020 title, it will be his sixth one and he will level Roger Federer to become one of the players with the most ATP Finals titles.

Rafael Nadal is also one step away from the finals, and he’ll face Dominic Thiem next. Fans desperately hope for another Rafa-Djoker final before the end of the 2020 tennis season and it definitely looks a possibility at the moment.
