The local boy, Jannik Sinner recently stunned the entire crowd at the season-ending championship taking place in Turin. In a three-hour and 11-minute nail-biting encounter at the Nitto ATP Finals, the Italian tennis star overcame the defending champion and the top seed, Novak Djokovic, 7-5, 6-7(5), 7-6(2). With two group-stage victories already in his bag, the 22-year-old is now on the verge of reaching the semifinal round.

However, things aren’t looking good for his Serbian colleague, as his chances of qualification are in jeopardy after his recent shocking defeat. Further, the fourth-seed Italian himself can further dent Djokovic’s chances at the round-robin event as strange qualification scenarios have now surfaced on social media.

The 36-year-old is part of the group, which is composed of the young tennis sensations Jannik Sinner and Holger Rune. The Italian tennis star has won both his first two group matches against Tsitsipas, and Djokovic. He is now one step away from the semifinal match. Rune and Djokovic, on the other hand, have a single win and a single defeat in their respective bags.

Consequently, the ‘Djoker’ is currently second in the Green group, while being tied on points with the Dane. As the top seed player is now in a challenging situation, the tennis journalist Mario Boccardi brought to light all the green group qualification scenarios:

 1) “Regardless of the score, if N. DJOKOVIC defeats H. HURKACZ and J. SINNER defeats H. RUNE, then J. SINNER wins the group and N. DJOKOVIC qualifies 2nd.”

2) “Regardless of the score, if H. HURKACZ defeats N. DJOKOVIC and J. SINNER defeats H. RUNE. then J. SINNER wins the group and N. DJOKOVIC qualifies 2nd.”

3) “Regardless of the score, if H. HURKACZ defeats N. DJOKOVIC and H. RUNE defeats J.SINNER then H. RUNE wins the group and J. SINNER qualifies 2nd.”

4) “If N. DJOKOVIC defeats H. HURKACZ in 2 sets and H. RUNE defeats J. SINNER in
2 sets, then H. RUNE wins the group and N. DJOKOVIC qualifies 2nd.”

5) “If N. DJOKOVIC defeats H. HURKACZ in 2 sets and H. RUNE defeats J. SINNER in S sets. then h. HURKACZ is eliminated and the order of remaining players is determined by % of games won.”

Given all the green group qualification scenarios, the Italian tennis player can potentially hurt Novak Djokovic’s prospects of advancing to the semifinals if he loses his last group match.
