The recently concluded Roland Garros was a massive landmark in the GOAT debate. Novak Djokovic trumped Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer in the slam race for the first time in his career. In addition to that, he also became the only male player to win all four slams at least thrice. It’s difficult to argue statistically against Djokovic. However, the GOAT debate is subjective to some extent.
Recently, former Italian tennis player Andres Seppi weighed in on the never-ending debate. He presented the statistical case as well as his own personal opinion of it. The Italian was pretty articulate and did not take anything away from the three legends of the game.

In an exclusive with Sportskeeda, Seppi said, “If you really go by the numbers, then you have to say, Djokovic. He has the most Grand Slams, he won all the Masters 1000 events, he has the most weeks at No. 1. So, it’s difficult not to say from the numbers that Djokovic is the best.” The Italian gave importance to the statistics and rightfully acknowledged Djokovic for it. However, he then went on to side with Roger Federer by bringing in the subjective element.
Seppi added, “As an athlete, as a person, and in general, how he involves people in tennis, I would go for Roger Federer due to his style and technique, everybody loved it. I would say he was the most elegant and the most loved player on tour.”
In addition to this, Seppi also hailed Rafael Nadal’s fighting spirit but mainly focused on Federer and Djokovic.

The debate between the Swiss and the Serb has received more traction lately as Djokovic is on the verge of equaling a certain achievement of Federer.
Novak Djokovic looks set to dethrone Roger Federer
After overtaking the Swiss Maestro in the slam race at last year’s Wimbledon, Djokovic is set to equal another major stat. The 23-time major champion is two wins away from his 8th Wimbledon title which would level him with Federer. Djokovic would also equal Federer’s record of winning most championships on the bounce with his fifth consecutive title.

Nadal holds the record for most Roland Garros titles while Djokovic does the same for Australian Opens. If Federer loses the sole ownership of the Wimbledon record, that could lead to a massive spin in the GOAT debate.
