Could Novak Djokovic really become the President of Serbia, or is this just wishful thinking?

To many, including his former coach Boris Becker, he is not just a tennis star but a symbol of national pride and resilience. 

Boris Becker engaged in an exclusive interview with Serbian magazine Sportal and deliberated on Novak Djokovic’s chances for the Olympics. He reflected on the Serb’s popularity in his country and highlighted the responsibilities he has for the grand stage of the sport, not just because of his skills, but the anticipation that has been laden on him as well. 

Speaking in the interview, Becker said, “I don’t know if you understand the importance of Novak Djokovic in Serbia. He can be president. He is a true icon in Serbia.” Continuing further, he reflected that Djokovic needs to fulfill his patriotic duties. “It is natural for him to perform for Serbia and represent his country. I worked in Rio with Serbian players. He was a superstar there. You can’t imagine what kind of expectations and power he has, he plays best when he plays for his nation.” And his popularity can be evidenced by several accolades that he has garnered.

Novak Djokovic was crowned the Laureus World Sportsman of the Year in 2023, one of the prestigious awards in the sports arena. This was the fifth time when he received the honor. Besides, the latest ESPN list of best athletes of the era places him at No. 11. While these accolades speak volumes of his success and popularity several others have admitted to his fame and have echoed similar sentiments.

In an interview with RMC, 2013 Wimbledon Champion Marion Bartoli expressed herself about Djokovic. “We know very well that if Novak was American, he’d have a statue in every city,” she had said. Similar sentiments were resonated by Djokovic’s father Srdjan Djokovic who said, “Novak is Serbia, and Serbia is Novak.” The dedication of Djokovic is an important fact behind Becker not being worried about his latest battle with injury.

Novak Djokovic has witnessed a troublesome battle with injuries lately. He tore the medial meniscus of his right knee during the French Open and was forced to remain off the court for quite some time. While he was not expected to return to Wimbledon following his surgery, he not only defied the odds but also emerged as the runner of the tournament. This sensational run made Becker ensure his success at the Olympics.

Speaking in the same interview, the 56-year-old said, “He is coming to Paris after the operation. The fact that he reached the final in London is close to a miracle.” Indeed, even his doctors said that it would be difficult for him to heal quickly before Wimbledon. Continuing further, Becker said, “He has a lot of time between London and Paris, he knows exactly what he needs to do. I wouldn’t worry about that.

It will be fascinating to see if the Serbian Maestro’s popularity in his country will give him a boost at the mega event and help him win big in Paris.
