Now there’s an update Juan Martin del Potro’s fans won’t be too excited to hear about. Naturally, retiring from the sport is a tough pill to swallow. You heard that right. The Argentine is finally ready to walk away. And who better than Novak Djokovic to drop the bitter-sweet update for the tennis world? That makes sense, considering del Potro plans his career’s last dance with the Serbian superstar.
Marred with injury concerns, del Potro hasn’t officially retired from the sport but has been inactive since he last participated in the 2022 Argentina Open. Having endured restrictive physical fitness, the former World No. 3 fractured his right patella in 2018 and has since been in a constant battle with recurring pains. However, the 35-year-old wasn’t ready to go out without a bang. In hopes of drawing the curtains on his impressive career, the Argentine pleaded with Djokovic to play with him before departing. “I have a dream. I want to play my last match in Argentina and I want you to come.” Luckily, the Serbian star has righteously heard him.
While speaking to reporters in a post-match presser at the Davis Cup, Djokovic confirmed that he will fly to Argentina later this year for a one-on-one exhibition match against del Potro. Though the Serbian did not dive into details surrounding the event, he heaped praises on the 35-year-old, lauding the latter’s likable personality and overall magnetism that has helped him stay relevant in tennis all these years.

“Del Potro is retiring from tennis with this exhibition match. We all know the impact he has left on tennis in general. He has been one of the most exciting players to watch in the last two decades. (Plus), the charisma, the character – very lovable, very likable guy. So, that should be a great event. It should be a phenomenal experience to play there and be part of this farewell match,” Djokovic spoke.
I asked Djoković about his upcoming exhibitions with Dimitrov in Sofia and del Potro in Buenos Aires—specifically, whether they’re about these guys being good friends on the tour or also an opportunity to visit cities where he hasn’t played official events in the past? #DavisCup pic.twitter.com/CC82gwEz4Y

It is worth noting that the exhibition event will be played in the Mary Terán de Weiss stadium in Buenos Aires. Billed as ‘The Last Challenge,’ the highly anticipated match is slated to commence on Sunday, December 1, with Nole expected to arrive in the country by late November. Light-hearted conversations and fun nights will come in handy for the duo, especially because this won’t be their first swing at sharing hilarious moments.

Have an interesting take?
During a practice session with the Argentine star, Nole amusingly labeled defeating the former World No. 3 during their 2018 US Open final encounter as his “greatest success.” To much hilarity, del Potro fired back by terming his Olympic triumphs over the Serb as his greatest conquests. Both players clashed twice at the Games. The Argentine sensation downed Djokovic in the quadrennial event’s 2012 edition to clinch the bronze medal and later ousted him in the first round of the Rio Olympics.
