It was the 2023 Wimbledon Championships. World Number 1, Novak Djokovic was up against Carlos Alcaraz in the summit clash of the tournament. A battle between two generational stars, the match was destined for greatness, and Alcaraz narrowly edging out the Serbinator to clinch his maiden Wimbledon title proved it. Months after that iconic game, it has been nominated for a big award.

The 2023 Wimbledon final was widely dubbed as an era-defining match. While Djokovic has dominated over the past decade and a half, Alcaraz is the frontrunner among the new-age stars. And recognizing the grass slam, the BAFTAs have chosen the Wimbledon for a huge honor.

Earlier today, BAFTA announced the nominations for the 2024 TV awards via its official Twitter handle. Among the several categories was one special category for sports – The Sports Coverage. The 2023 Wimbledon final was nominated for the Specialist Factual as millions of fans across the globe tuned in for this tennis spectacle.

Alcaraz’s win over Djokovic was streamed 4.1 million times on BBC iPlayer and BBC Sport online. Additionally, the match drew a peak television audience of 11.3 million on the BBC, shattering many viewership records on the way. It became one of the most viewed sporting events on BBC, easily justifying the BAFTA nomination. Other nominations in this category included the Cheltenham Festival Day One and the MOTD Live: FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023.

Meanwhile, Djokovic narrowly missed out on the Calendar Grand Slam. While he had won the other three major titles last year, Djokovic had to remain content with the runners-up trophy at Wimbledon. Following his defeat, he made a heartbreaking confession.

Djokovic felt he could’ve won the 2023 Wimbledon title

The Serb appeared in the post-match interview, where he opened up about his harrowing defeat. Djokovic even recalled the final against Roger Federer at the 2019 Wimbledon where he had sneaked victory against the Swiss maestro.

The Serb said, “That day, he (Federer at the 2019 Wimbledon final) was the best player, he was supposed to win. This year it was me who was perhaps the best player in the Wimbledon final for most of the match. I was supposed to win, and I lost. That doesn’t mean Carlos didn’t deserve it.”

After a strong 2023 season, Djokovic is yet to get into his groove this year. He’ll be seen in action during the clay-court season after skipping the Miami Open.
