Tennis legend Novak Djokovic recently opened up about his unique friendship with an Iranian refugee. Mehdi, who spent nine years in detention, shared moments with Djokovic while he was going through a tough time in his career. The bond had its roots at the Park Hotel in Melbourne, where the Serb stayed for five nights before being deported in 2022 due to his vaccination status.

In a recent interview, Djokovic expressed his special connection with Mehdi. “I feel some kind of special connection with Mehdi. We keep in touch; he lives in Minnesota now, so we will see each other when I go to the US. He told me that he was grateful for the attention my case brought,” he mentioned.

Djokovic shared his thoughts on the detainees’ release, saying, “From what I’ve understood, most of the detainees were released. It was one good thing that came out of all that – because of me, that place got so much media attention, the pressure from the media followed and people were released.”
