Can Jannik Sinner's mental toughness outshine the doping saga and secure his legacy in tennis history?

It has been quite a roller coaster ride for Jannik Sinner. The current world No. 1 started his year with a terrific Australian Open win, followed by another hard court Slam at the US Open 8 months later. However, the terrible doping saga which overshadowed his wins refuses to calm down. And the Italian sensation responded by maintaining his stoic composure throughout the season. But everyone might have one thought circling: how is he managing everything despite a tense situation? His coach, Darren Cahill, might provide an answer to this.

In just two days, Jannik Sinner will begin his campaign for the year end ATP Finals title. Amid preparations, his coach, Cahill, took a few moments to discuss Sinner’s wins and struggles throughout the season. In an interview with an Italian publication, Corriere Della Sera, Cahill was asked about Sinner’s well being. The proud Coach exuded unshakable confidence in his protégé as he said, “After what he has been through, he has realized that he can survive anything in life:

nothing can scare him any more.” However, the question of CAS’ appeal still looms over the World No.1. But it seems that things are sorted on Sinner’s end, according to the coach. “We know that disqualification is a possibility, but there’s nothing we can do to change this situation. So we’re focusing on our daily work. Whatever happens, Jannik will face it with his usual maturity and composure. And we will do everything to protect him,” he remarked. This is not far from the truth if one observes Sinner’s season.

He has been dealing with the doping charges since March end, after being tested positive for a banned substance, Clostebol. The world has scrutinized him since he won the Cincinnati Open when an independent panel established by ITIA cleared him of all charges. Despite everything, Sinner went on to win the US Open, and the Shanghai Masters, and the World No.1 would be fighting for the year-end glory at home. And he had the support of his team, family and loved ones throughout the battle.

Moreover, Sinner has been a source of inspiration not only to the tennis enthusiasts around the world but also to his coach. Opening up about the interdependent relationship between the team and Sinner, he said, “Everyone talks about the team around him. How important we are to him. But the opposite is also true: he is the leader, he is the one who leads the way.” However, everything is not as black and white as it seems to be.

He said, “We are not machines. We are people who only seek the best we can do on any given day. There are those who invest more time in training and those who invest less. I invest a lot. That didn’t mean I was always well. But I’m putting a lot of effort into always making improvements. To do this, I need people around me who help me feel good”
