In an interview with PEOPLE, the American actress opened up about her decades-long struggle with drug addiction and how she once overdosed so severely that she fell into a coma. As she disclosed, it also left her unable to talk, as she wasn’t sure if she would ever be able to speak again after waking up from the coma. “I woke up from a coma, without any words,” she said.
Later, Tatum O’Neal also discussed her continuous road to rehabilitation and recovery. She revealed that no one knew whether she would survive or not. She said, “I was in a coma and nobody could figure out if I was going to die or if I was going to live.”

The Hollywood star is now going through regular speech therapy after she was diagnosed with aphasia, an injury to her brain that left her unable to talk. Apart from this, the Oscar winner also said that she is now ardently following the sobriety path.
