Today marks yet another important day in the illustrious career of Novak Djokovic. He takes on Carlos Alcaraz in his 35th grand slam final in the quest for his 24th crown. With a win today, he can also equal Roger Federer‘s record for the most Wimbledon titles in men’s singles in the open era. The Serb starts as a favorite against the world number 1 with a 90% winning record in the Championship. Ahead of the much-awaited final today, the American legend Chris Evert dropped some serious predictions.
But what did the 18-time major champion have to say about the final?

In the ESPN’s talk show, Breakfast at Wimbledon, Chris Evert went big on Novak Djokovic with her prediction. She also suggested that Carlos Alcaraz would have to seal the deal in three or four sets should he come through.
Evert said, “Nobody can beat Novak in five sets. Okay? I mean he just manages himself. He has such great technique that it doesn’t break down under pressure and that’s when it usually breaks down. And of course, we know he is superior mentally and emotionally than all the players.”
Those were some serious words from Chris Evert. However, one must also account for the fact that Carlos Alcaraz will have a physical advantage over the Serb. But, the 18-time major champion gave more importance to the mental and emotional aspects. And Djokovic’s record in the fifth set of matches is enough to back Evert up here.
Novak Djokovic’s monstrous record in 5th set
To date, Novak Djokovic has played 43 matches that have gone onto the fifth set. Out of the 43 matches, Novak Djokovic has won a whopping 34 times, thereby registering a 79% success rate. Only Kei Nishikori has a higher winning percentage at 83% (minimum 10 matches). It must also be noted that Djokovic has not lost a fifth set since his Roland Garros exit to Dominic Thiem in 2019.
On the other hand, Alcaraz also seems to do well in the deciders. After a heart-breaking exit to Matteo Berrettini at the 2022 Australian Open, the Spaniard went on to win all four of his matches that went to the fifth set. His remarkable US Open 2022 title included three consecutive five-set victories.
