Rarely will one find a player who is not a fan of the Swiss Maestro. Roger Federer is one personality who is known for being a level-headed individual, along with his tennis talent. This is largely due to his great people skills, as he treats everyone fairly. With his friendly nature and consideration, Federer became one of the most loved players on tour. Now, a close friend of the former Swiss player has detailed how Federer brought about a monumental change to the locker room in tennis, dismissing the norm set by the likes of John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, and Pete Sampras.
While Federer developed a friendly persona over time, it was not always the case, especially during the early days of his career. The Swiss Maestro decided to change his personality with the help of his coach, Peter Carter. If not for him, Federer’s uncouth demeanor could’ve transpired further, but Carter helped him realize his folly and ushered in a new era.

In the biography ‘The Roger Federer Effect: Rivals, Friends, Fans and How the Maestro Changed Their Lives‘, Eric Budorac, a friend of the Mighty Federer, talked about how the Swiss Maestro brought about an immense change to the locker room. In the era of players like John McEnroe, Pete Sampras and Ivan Lendl, higher-ranked players thought nothing of players who were down the ranking order.
Their treatment of such players would reflect their mindset. However, Federer came in and ushered in a new era. His friendly and polite demeanor also showed in his interactions with players who were far down the rankings.

Budorac explained, “I hear stories from the era of John McEnroe and Jimmy Connors that they did not treat the other players very well; they didn’t care so much about the other players. I heard stories about Ivan Lendl, about Pete Sampras. Some not-so-nice things on how they would treat people and act. And then Roger comes in and sets the tone for the locker room. He cares about others and perceives the tennis community as a whole.”

As he did with tennis, he also revolutionized how top players would talk to players in the lower tiers. He said, “And then for everybody else, whether you’re 3, 5, 20, 50 in the world, it was no longer okay to be an a**hole.”
