After winning his first Wimbledon title, Carlos Alcaraz survived a scar at the US Open. The 20-year-old Spaniard faced defeat in the semi-finals of the last Grand Slam tournament of the year, ending his 12-match winning streak in New York. Alcaraz, in fact, admitted in the press afterward that he “wasn’t mature enough to find solutions.” Now, Andre Agassi’s former tennis coach has a different story to tell.
The former world number one attempted to push himself this year to perform at his peak, without disappointing himself over the entire tennis season, and even managed to defeat the 24-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic. Yet, his performance at the US Open has been a topic of discussion, and the 57-year-old tennis coach is ready to put an end to the discussion.

Just nine days after the 2022 US Open champion faced an uncertain defeat against Daniil Medvedev, he ended his tournament run just a step ahead of the championship clash, leaving many tennis fans and players unhappy. Recently, when Darren Cahill appeared on Jimmy Connors’ podcast show he analyzed Alcaraz’s US Open performance.
He said, “I think what Carlos was able to achieve at Wimbledon, firstly, being remarkable, but secondly, going from somebody that people were thinking, ‘Okay! It is going to take this guy quite a few years,’ and even they know they accept this, it would be quite a few years before he becomes a threat on grass, to be able to, 12 months later, turn around and hold that trophy aloft and beat Novak in the final. That says everything.
“That says everything about his competitor that Carlos is, his work ethic, his determination, and also his maturity. He might say that he wasn’t mature enough. But he is. I think that had a bit of a lag effect physically and mentally on him through the whole US summer. I don’t think he played great tennis in Toronto or Cincinnati. But he was just good enough to battle through some difficult situations in certainly in Cincinnati and play that amazing final against Novak. And that probably left him a little bit physically fatigued for the US Open.”
Nevertheless, during the same conversation, even the five-time US Open champion dwelled upon the 20-year-old tennis star’s performance and drew analogies from his own experience to the disheartened Spaniard.
