Nick Kyrgios‘ long-awaited return is scheduled for next year’s Australian Open. After almost two years of his time away from the court, due to persistent injuries, the Aussie is gearing up for a solid comeback. And now, a new social media update from him seems to have hyped up his return even more. But why? Well, it’s got something to do with Novak Djokovic!

For the unversed, Novak and Kyrgios have shared a good bond. The tale of their mutual respect began way back during the pandemic. When COVID-19 was at its peak, Novak expressed an objection to the vaccination. While he was getting a strong backlash, Nick was one of the few who stood by him. “I thought to myself, ‘Well, you know, I really want to speak to him because I don’t know, like, what have I done?’ So then two years ago … what happened here in Australia for me, I don’t want to go back, but, you know, we had a tough time, and you stood up for me. That was a big surprise. You were one of the very few colleagues that stood up that used his platform, used his voice, to support me,” Kyrgios said back then.

Djokovic made sure to respond. Acknowledging Nick’s support, he said “That’s something that I’ll never forget, and since that moment, our relationship has gotten better.” Well, if the bond is so good, how about taking it to the next level with a team-up at the Australian Open? At least that’s what Nick’s Instagram story, dated December 10, is suggesting. He shared a response to a fan who asked him to say something for the 24-time Grand Slam champion. “Absolute legend,” Nick wrote while showing an image of himself and Djoker together. However, he also added a line that may send everyone into a frenzy. “could have some exciting news soon,” wrote Kyrgios. He also added two eye emojis and the “GOAT” emoji while admiring the Serbian.

So what could this mean? Is Nick going to play doubles with Novak as his partner in the Australian Open? As of now, one can’t make an assumption from a mere Instagram story. However, the way Nick has presented things in the story is intriguing, to say the least.

Nick’s unfiltered nature keeps him in the news on a constant basis. Take for example his latest remark on Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Not to mention it involves Novak Djokovic too! But what did the Australian say about the Big 3?

Nick Kyrgios claims he’s got a higher tennis IQ than Federer, Nadal, and Novak

Speaking in an episode of the Let’s Trot podcast, Kyrgios was asked to share the best attributes he likes in the Big 3. He picked Djokovic for his backhand, Federer for his slice shots, and Nadal for his forehand and physical fitness. But when it came to tennis intelligence, Nick was quite clear in his mind. “I don’t know if anyone in the history of tennis has made the final of Wimbledon without a coach,” he said, as reported by Tennis Tonic on December 9.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Kyrgios' claim of higher tennis IQ than Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic justified or just bravado?

Have an interesting take?

For the unaware, Kyrgios has been without a coach since 2017. Being solo, he made it to the final of the 2022 Wimbledon. Continuing further, Nick said, “So for IQ, I’d probably take myself.” Well, this sentence might create a stir on social media.

Coming back to Kyrgios’ anticipated return, he will make his comeback at this month’s Brisbane International. The Aussie would like to make the most of this opportunity to get his rhythm back ahead of the Australian Open. His record at the Melbourne Major is not very good in general. Back in 2022, before he went on a long recovery break, he could only reach the second round of the tournament. This time, his goal will be to go beyond and possibly clinch his first-ever Grand Slam trophy.
