The tennis world has been buzzing—and not in a good way—thanks to a series of doping controversies shaking up the sport. It all began with Jannik Sinner’s headline-grabbing saga, only to be followed by a surprising situation involving Iga Swiatek. Fans and critics have had a lot to say, but leave it to Nick Kyrgios to turn the chaos up a notch. The Aussie star has been lashing out left, right, and center, not just at the accused players but also their supporters. But here’s the twist: Kyrgios is now in hot water himself! A past confession of his has resurfaced, and let’s just say the tables have turned.
Taking to X, a fan shared an old post of Kyrgios from 2022, where he detailed the challenges he faced in his professional career. “It was one of my darkest periods. If you look closely, on my right arm you can see my self-harm. I was having suicidal thoughts and was literally struggling to get out of bed, let alone play in front of millions. I was lonely, depressed, negative, abusing alcohol, drugs, pushed away family & friends,” Kyrgios wrote in the post. And while he might have used the post to express his challenges, it resurfaced amidst his recent jibes against Sinner and Swiatek.
The X user posted a screenshot of Kyrgios’ old post and wrote, “For once I want to be a conspiracy theorist too! So… Kyrgios has always admitted that during his “black period,” he used alcohol & DRUGS. However, he boasts of never having tested positive for any test. How is this possible? Did he know about the tests in advance or was he just lucky? 🤔” (translated from Italian). This quickly sparked a major furor with many users joining the fray.

diciamo allora “droghe” in senso lato. Ne ha parlato anche nella prima stagione di Breakpoint e da lì capiamo che il riferimento al periodo buio è quello della stagione 2019, quando era più che attivo…

Several users took to the micro-blogging platform to lash out at the Australian player alleging him of preaching something that he never followed himself. Many people also speculated that it is due to his strong links that he has managed to escape any consequences.
Nick Kyrgios in hot waters over his past confession
Taking to X, a user wrote, “let’s say “drugs” in a broad sense. He also talked about it in the first season of Breakpoint and from there we understand that the reference to the dark period is that of the 2019 season, when he was more than active…” Remember, Nick Kyrgios interestingly confessed to consuming drugs in the Netflix documentary, Break Point.
Detailing the challenges he faced after losing to Rafael Nadal in Wimbledon’s second round in 2019, Kyrgios said, “I ended up in a psych ward in London to figure out my problems.” Continuing further in the documentary, he added, “I was drinking, abusing drugs, lost my relationship with my family, pushed all my close friends away. You could tell I was hurting.” Now, these statements have resurfaced again. More such reactions continued to follow.
So substances of abuse are only banned in competition. So he basically timed his intake well and got lucky that they didn’t find traces of it during a competition or didn’t test when he had those traces.

Responding to the post, another user wrote, “I have to understand why this being is so protected by the establishment. He is given everything, no one tells him anything. Why? What power does he have? What is he hiding?”Kyrgios has often sparked controversies for his unusual takes and gestures. In Wimbledon this year when he took over a new role as commentator, he was accused of breaching Wimbledon’s culture by not wearing proper formal dress. Remember, Kyrgios was seen wearing a massive Stone Island puffer jacket with a cap that had “Gifted” etched on it, as against his counterparts who were seen in formal attire. Meanwhile, several other users joined the fray to lash out at him.
“Almost all recreational drugs are banned substances by WADA such as MDMA, ecstasy, methamphetamines, BZP’s, cocaine, cannabis, synthetics, heroin. Thanks @NickKyrgios for admitting you took banned substances(even if OOC),” another user wrote. Kyrgios has been completely bashing Swiatek and Sinner over failed doping tests. When Swiatek’s case came to light, Kyrgios took to X and wrote, “OUR SPORT IS COOKED.” As for Sinner, he demanded stringent punishment and a ban of at least 2 years. But now, his old remarks is bringing him into a similar situation.

Questo è un punto interessante perché gli atleti per competere hanno l’obbligo di essere testati nell’ out of competition system. Ad esempio se uno si ritira e poi ritorna alle competizioni deve aspettare 6 mesi per verificare che non sia dopato.

However, one user came out to defend the Australian and sarcastically wrote, “In fact, you’re probably right… At this point you can imagine what kind of cheaters are those who get caught, even twice in a row…” Interestingly, Kyrgios recently made a contrasting claim of taking no drugs. In a reply to a user on X, Kyrgios wrote, “I have an 8 figure career. Grand slam finalist and beaten all of the greatest of all time. Doesn’t seem bad to me. No drugs either.” But this did not reduce the flak against him.

Yet another user joined the fray and wrote, “That’s what we’re all wondering. It would be interesting to understand on what basis these tests are carried out and to measure their actual capacity to detect (doping) substances. I’m sure we would come across some burning truths…” The remark can be seen as an attack on the entire investigative process that has been doubted and accused of preferential treatment to high-ranked players throughout the case.
For now, it would be interesting to see if Nick Kyrgios would come out to defend himself. While he’s never one to shy away from controversy, this time, the tennis bad boy might be facing some challenges.
