Jannik Sinner’s Italy beats Nick Kyrgios’ Australia at the SF of the 2024 Davis Cup! Although the 29-year-old Aussie couldn’t make it through to the battleground this time, he showcased his constant support for his team from the sidelines. Especially with the way things have gone in between these two surrounding Sinner’s doping saga, it’s quite needless to mention how desperately Kyrgios might have wanted his team to win this battle. However, his dream of seeing Australia make it to the finals for the third consecutive time was shattered with a 0-2 loss against Italy. What did Kyrgios say about the disappointing result?
Australia is in fact the second most successful team in this competition. They have won 28 titles so far, but their last triumph at the Davis Cup came back in 2003! If we take a look at their SF clash against Italy, Matteo Berrettini edged out Australia’s Thanasi Kokkinakis by 6(6)-7,6-3,7-5 in the opening match. After that, it was followed by a dominating performance from the world number one, Jannik Sinner against Alex de Minaur. Sinner defeated De Minaur by 6-3,6-4 in the second match and sealed the deal for his nation at 2-0! This is their second consecutive final appearance at this iconic team event. They’ll face the Netherlands at the Martin Carpena Arena on Sunday!
Reflecting his thoughts on this disappointing loss, Nick Kyrgios later on, tweeted, “Was trying to stay awake when Kokki was playing – woke up and we went down 😩 thought this was our year 💔.“ Kokkinakis got an inch closer to clinching yet another remarkable win at the Davis Cup level, after saving four match points to beat America’s Ben Shelton in the QF. However, the crowd in Malaga, made his job incredibly tough at the end. Later on after the match, Kokkinakis was heard claiming, “We’re in Spain…but it felt like we were in Italy. It was a tough match…I lost my concentration for a little bit in the third set.“

What did the other Aussies say in this epic contest? Team Captain, Lleyton Hewitt said he’s super proud of the boys and the effort they’ve put in for the whole team. “It’s very tough for all of them. They’ve worked hard to give themselves a chance to be here and get close again. Thanasi left everything on the court. Berrettini played a fantastic match, all three sets,” said Hewitt. Then Nick Kyrgios’ other compatriot, Alex de Minaur was asked to reflect his thoughts on playing against someone like Jannik Sinner. What did he say though, on this topic?

Well, interestingly, Jannik Sinner has now an H2H record of 9-0 over Alex de Minaur. Reflecting on his thoughts on facing the Italian superstar, De Minaur added, “It’s like trying to solve a puzzle that not many people have succeeded in. That’s probably the best way to describe it. His ball speed and consistency make him maintain his focus throughout the match. So, if you want to go out there and beat him, you have to play your best tennis.“ Alex de Minaur is world number 9 at the moment and it seems he has no answer to Jannik Sinner’s excellence on the court! Can Nick Kyrgios be that answer to the questions raised by the world number one in the 2025 season?

Are there any other major goals that he has set for himself in the next few months? Well, previously during an interview with SXSW, Nick Kyrgios said, “My only motivation to come back and play is to try and win a grand slam, and I’ll give it one more shot.” However, later on in an interview with 9News Melbourne, he claimed, “I’ve already won in my eyes. Now everything I do on the tennis court whether I win a match or a tournament or anything like that is going to be a bonus.“ No matter what are his goals for the next season, his biggest challenge for the next season would be facing the top players in the Tour.
Talking about facing a top player, the first name that comes to our mind is Jannik Sinner! Kyrgios has faced Sinner only once in his career and the results didn’t come in his favor at that time. With the form Sinner has been in the last few months, would he dare to face him yet again in his comeback season? “One player I would like to play against when I come back is Sinner. I would like to play against him at some point, hopefully not in my first match when I come back! But it would definitely be on my calendar,” said Nick Kyrgios in a recent interview.
