Nick Kyrgios standing firm on Sinner—Is he the hero tennis needs or just stirring the pot?

Nick Kyrgios is one of those players who have been outspoken about Jannik Sinner’s doping saga. Since day one, the Aussie tennis star didn’t seem to be too pleased with the verdict! “You get tested twice with a banned (steroid) substance… you should be gone for 2 years. Your performance was enhanced. Massage cream…. Yeah, nice,” Kyrgios wrote on X. Clearly, the Italian wouldn’t be too happy with these comments. Now imagine a scenario where Nick Kyrgios is talking to Sinner in an on-court interview. Well, how would Sinner feel, given the Aussie’s recent comments? Things would be “different“, Sinner said when asked about it, but Kyrgios is still backing his stance firmly.

Kyrgios is currently working with ESPN and he has been spotted multiple times conducting on-court interviews after the matches. Shortly after securing his victory against America’s Alex Michelsen in the R2 of the 2024 US Open, Sinner came up for a post-match press conference. He was asked what would be his reaction if he met the Aussie face-to-face during such interviews. His reply was, “I don’t want to respond to what he said. Everyone is free to say everything, so it’s OK. If that is the case, let’s see. It’s going to be different, for sure, but I don’t know.

Jannik Sinner has already been facing quite a few controversies surrounding this incident. Clearly, he doesn’t want to get into another altercation with a peer. Rather, he claimed, “I’m always quite relaxed. I’m someone who forgets quite fast something.” Kyrgios, however, didn’t waste any time jumping onto the scene, as he commented on a post which was put up by the Eurosport. As athletes, we use our platforms to make sure things are fair and even. That’s all I did. Some players are angry. We know Sinner is amazing, great tennis player and one of the main faces of the sport. But if you expect us to be silent…… we won’t,” the Aussie wrote.

Although Sinner looks a bit unfazed by the possibility of being interviewed by Kyrgios, still it’d be interesting to see what happens when the two come face-to-face with each other. Apart from Kyrgios, we have seen players like Denis Shapovalov, Kamil Majchrzak, and a few others raise question marks on this doping saga. How does Jannik Sinner feel to see his colleagues taking a different stand on this matter?

Jannik Sinner doesn’t want to concentrate on those things which are out of his control

While having a conversation with Chris Fowler, Nick Kyrgios admitted, “It’s nothing against Sinner personally at all. I know how important he is. He’s one of the greatest tennis players we have right now… And how important he’s gonna be for the next 15 years. I’m not denying any of that. Nothing against him personally.” However, he also mentioned that he has seen many of his friends getting suspended after an incident like that. Using the example of Simona Halep Kyrgios added that there’s always a “different process for different players.”

Have an interesting take?

Although Kyrgios says he’s more against the ‘inequality’ in the whole system rather than any individual player, Sinner feels he can’t really control what others think. “I cannot control the players’ reaction, and if I have something to say to someone, I go there privately, because I’m this kind of person. But, look, overall, it has been not bad. So I’m happy about that,” said the world number one.

Sinner also mentioned that he’s “very glad and happyfor the support he has got from the fans throughout these tough times. However, he knows this scar will take time to heal. At the moment, he is just taking it day by day. Nevertheless, what are your thoughts on Kyrgios’ remarks on this controversial incident? Let us know in the comments below.
