Is Nick Kyrgios' attitude hurting his career more than his actual performance on the court?

“Ridiculous—whether it was accidental or planned,” Nick Kyrgios commented on Jannik Sinner’s doping saga. The Aussie player claims to be “not bitter at all,” even after his incessant comments on the World No. 1 for being privileged to have avoided a ban after the doping case. Now, Kyrgios has once again embroiled himself in a controversy while defending his own “level of play.” The ESPN commentator’s sassy reply to his playing statistics with Sinner has reignited his feud with the 2024 US Open finalist!

One fan, happy at Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, and Alexander Zverev’s exit from the US Open, posted on X, a video of Sinner sipping coffee and then being surprised. But Nick Kyrgios couldn’t let it go. Responding to the post, he quickly added, “When it still shows up in the second test hahahahahahah..I make myself laugh.” The Aussie was probably referring to Sinner testing positive for Clostebol (a banned substance) twice earlier this year. This fueled the ongoing drama even more, and the Sinner fans pointed out the 29-year-old’s consistent attacks on the World No.1. However, Kyrgios quickly jumped in to emphasize how his criticism was not personal.

A fan pointed out one of Kyrgios’ comments, “Sorry, have you played before at this level?” and asked a counter question, probably implying that the Aussie himself didn’t have a very successful career at the highest level to be asking these questions to the fans. “Have you?” the fan wrote responding to Kyrgios’ question. Well, Nick Kyrgios has defeated Rafael Nadal three times, Roger Federer once, and Djokovic twice, so he proudly boasted, “Do you understand how dumb you sound when I’ve beaten all the greatest to ever play lol-rat”

However, when an X user posted a screenshot of Sinner’s lead of 1-0 over Kyrgios, the Aussie hurled back and wrote, “Yes, I know he has beaten me lol, but the tweet said I don’t play at the level 🤣.” The back and forth with fans has again landed Kyrgios in a rocky relationship with Sinner. Surprisingly, the Italian player seems unaffected and graciously provided his viewpoint on the subject earlier when asked about it.

Sinner chooses silence over commenting on Nick Kyrgios’ statements

Have an interesting take?

After Nick Kyrgios’ dicey comments on Sinner’s doping case, the possibility of him interviewing the World No. 1 player seemed to be a far-fetched idea. However, when Sinner won his second-round match at Flushing Meadows, the 23-year-old player was open to the idea of being interviewed by Kyrgios.

“I don’t know. I don’t want to respond to what he (Nick Kyrgios) said. Everyone is free to say everything. It’s ok. If that is the case, let’s see. It’s gonna be different for sure,” said Sinner, who had to undergo a few months of trial after testing positive for a banned substance during his 2024 Indian Wells campaign.

Moreover, he added, “Maybe I say something now and then the reaction will be something else. I’m always quite relaxed. I’m someone who forgets things quite fast. Everyone is free to say everything. It is what it is.”

Sinner’s silence and Nick Kyrgios’ endless remarks on him are making headlines at the US Open. If Sinner wins his career’s second grand slam in New York, what will be Kyrgios’ response after that? We shall soon find out!
