David Goffin, the Belgian tennis ace, has been playing professional tennis since 2009. He touched his peak form in the years 2016 and 2017 and, owing to that, he was ranked as high as the world no.7. However, after a quarterfinal run in the 2019 Wimbledon Championship, Goffin’s form plateaued.

Following that, in August 2021, he suffered a pestering knee injury, which slowed him even more. Now, after struggling to find his form for months, the Belgian seems to have improved, as he reached the final of the Halle Open.

The time when David Goffin thrashed a World No.1

As Goffin incurred a defeat against the current World No.1 Daniil Medvedev, a clip of his from the 2016 Mubadala World Tennis Championship resurfaced on social media. Back then he took down Andy Murray, the World No.1 of that time and spoke about how outclassing a no.1 player feels like. He said, “Sometimes it’s nice to see World No. 1 or the World No. 2 in difficulty. And tonight I won. So maybe that’s why we were happy to see something different.”

The Belgian tennis ace defeated Andy Murray in a straight set of  7-6, 6-4 and had a run till the finals of the tournament. Where the 22-time Grand Slam champion and defending champion Rafael Nadal got the better of him.

How was Goffin’s clay court season?

After claiming his sixth title in the Marrakech, Goffin stepped into the clay courts of the Monte Carlo masters. In the ATP 1000 event, he looked strong as he continued defeating his opponents in straight sets till Alejandro Davidovich Fokina, the eventual runner-up of the tournament, defeated him.

Following that, the 31-year-old suffered a first round exit in the Serbian Open and a fourth round exit in Madrid. Then, after testing his luck in the red dirt of Rome, Goffin took part in the French Open.

In Paris, he lost against the Pole Hubert Hurkacz in the third round. Currently, he is participating in grass-based events to prepare for the upcoming Wimbledon Championship.
