Frances Tiafoe registered the biggest win of his career at the US Open 2022. He came out on top against the 22-time major champion Rafael Nadal in a four-set encounter at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The crowd was stunned when the local boy cruised past the tournament favorite.

In the Netflix docuseries ‘Break Point’, Tiafoe’s range of emotions was visible. He spoke about what he went through before and after the match. From his girlfriend to his coach, everyone was in disbelief. It was arguably one of the most emotional moments of the tournament and the Netflix crew did a fine job in capturing everything.

After converting the match point against Rafael Nadal, Tiafoe was stunned. He couldn’t believe what he had achieved. The American just sat down on his seat for a couple of minutes to let everything sink in. He said, via Netflix, “The world stopped. Couldn’t hear anything. Absolute disbelief. So good. There was just so much love everywhere. You start realizing the magnitude of what you’re doing.”

His girlfriend, Ayan Broomfield further added, “Everything from the seven years that I’ve known him flashed through my head. I was like, whoa, what? We’re here. No one expected him to do anything like that. He shocked the entire tennis world.” His coach Wayne Richard Ferreira was as happy as the couple and said, “Frances beat Rafa out there. He didn’t lose any focus and intensity. He really showed him he’s a great player.” However, amidst all the emotions, Tiafoe makes a shocking confession once the victory had sunk in.

After the victory, when Tiafoe went to his coach and said, “I never want to play him again“. It showed that despite winning the encounter, Tiafoe was forced to throw everything at the kitchen sink to come through. Even in defeats, Nadal is one of the toughest competitors in the history of the sport. He may have lost the battle but Tiafoe had to grind hard to bag the win.

Tiafoe went on to reach the semi-finals of the US Open but the fourth-round encounter against Nadal will be etched in his memory forever. One might think that he would fancy playing the Spaniard again but that was not the case.
