“Needs to Be Resolved”: Tennis Legend Points Out the Major Flaw in Alexander Zverev’s Game

Alexander Zverev did not have the start that he would have wanted at the ATP Finals 2020. The 2018 champion lost to Daniil Medvedev in the first robin round of the tournament, that too, in straight sets. The final scoreline of the match was 6-3, 6-4.

After Zverev’s defeat, there was a major problem that former World No. 1 Tim Henman point out in Alexander Zverev’s gameplay after his defeat. The former British player pointed out that Zverev would not be able to win many matches in the future if he didn’t work hard on his second serve.

“I worry about his serve… This has been an issue for him for some time now… When your second serve is that unreliable, it is amazing how that can filter into other parts of his game,” said Henman.

In his match against Medvedev, Zverev’s winning percentage on the second serve was only 33%. This was no way closer to the 72% which he enjoyed on the first serve. To everyone’s surprise, Sascha even did seven double faults during the game at the ATP Finals 2020.

“When you see how big a problem the second serve is for him, you have to give him a lot of credit for coming through and winning as many matches as he has this year,” added the 46-year-old Henman.

Tim Henman believed that the second serve was affecting Zverev in more than one way. Although he emphasized that it was affecting his overall performance, he also claimed that Zverev should be given credit for playing so well in the year despite this limitation.

It was evident that Henman was critical of only Zverev’s second serve. He, however, was confident that the World No. 7 had the potential to win many titles in the future.

“I’m sure Zverev can win Grand Slam events in the future, but that second serve is an issue that needs to be resolved,” concluded Henman. It looks like Henman really has great expectations from Alexander Zverev. He said that if Zverev managed to improve his serve, he could become a much better player.

Alexander Zverev will next face Diego Schwartzman at the ATP Finals 2020.
