The reporter asked the player what would he say to her if he could. Djokovic immediately said, “I would hug her first!” Though he expressed his remorse over her absence from this world now, he was happy to spend time with her. He said, “Winning my first trophy here in 2011, I had the opportunity to share it with her, to hug her.” The legendary coach passed away in 2013.
The coach has played an important role in shaping not only his career but also his resilience and disciplined personality. He said, “She taught me so much about life – not to mention tennis – and that professionalism and dedication comes from her.”
The coach used to guide the player by watching videos of famous tennis players. She helped him live and lead a certain way of life. He said, “She explained to me the game, tactics, why I do certain exercises, how I have to live…”.
How did Gencic cultivate Djokovic into the best player in the world?
The teachings were not limited to just tennis. Besides that, she also taught him how to set a good routine in his life. Gencic emphasized his school education. He told, “It is important that I always treat people with respect and sport.” Novak Djokovic credited her and said, “She is my tennis mother and the most important tennis mentor.”

He was grateful for her cooperation and devotion in cultivating him into one of the best tennis players in the world. The Serb said, “I am grateful for everything she gave me in my beginnings, the time she dedicated to me.” She had also coached Ivanisevic and Monica Seles.
The coach shaped the initial careers of the tennis legend and now Goran Ivanisevic coaches the Serbian player. Novak Djokovic has now clinched 7 Wimbledon titles under his name.
