Andy Murray has once again proven that he is a true legend on and off the court while adhering to his national duties at the Davis Cup. The 36-year-old is currently representing Great Britain at the historic international team event where he gave his country a winning start against Switzerland. In doing so, the 3-time singles Grand Slam champion missed his grandmother’s funeral. The unfortunate event took place the same day as his match. Murray, a man torn between family and professional commitments, was heartbroken.

Notably, the ATP legend was overcome with emotions after a great victory as he paid a heartfelt tribute to his gran. It was a tear-jerking moment for Murray in Manchester that garnered the sympathy of numerous fans, who later banded in support of him on social media.

After overcoming his Swiss opponent, Leandro Riedi 6-7 (7-9) 6-4 6-4, the 36-year-old dedicated his win to his late grandmother. In his on-court interview, Murray was overwhelmed with emotions while revealing that he missed her funeral due to the national duties. After playing under such difficult circumstances, the Brit said, “I’m sorry to my family I’m not able to be there. Gran, this one is for you.”

Noting the same, the LTA’s official Twitter channel hailed Murray while sharing a video clip of his emotional on-court interview. They added a caption, “What an incredible performance from Sir @andy_murray given the circumstances 👏”

The comments section of their social media post was filled with reactions from fans uniting together in support of the former world No. 1 player. One of the fans hailed Andy Murray as a legend both on and off the court, “True legend on and off the court. She would be very proud of you Andy ❤️”

Meanwhile, a user lauded how the Brit was able to compete under such circumstances as he also lauded his “fitting tribute” to his late grandmother. He commented, “I marvel at his ability to focus on the game; I’m sure it’s what his Gran would have wanted … it’s wonderful that he battled through and won – what a fitting tribute to her.”

Similarly, another fan asserted that it must have been so difficult for Andy Murray and it takes some strength of character. He said, “😢it must have been so difficult for Andy to go out there today. Goodness I really feel for him. He’s a true warrior. So proud of him. His gran would have been very proud too, that takes some strength of character to do what he did out there. “

While offering his condolences, a fan said that the entire tennis community is proud of the 3-time singles Grand Slam champion.
