Day 2 of the Monte-Carlo Masters has arrived, and it has set up a great bout between a French and an Argentine. Ugo Humbert will play lock horns against the clay-court specialist Federico Coria. Humbert and Coria similarly started the year but found themselves in different spots leading up to the Monte-Carlo Masters.

The French player has experienced some newfound glory in the 2024 season and aims to set himself up for another instance in 2024. Coria, on the other hand, is aiming to change the state of his current career.

Humbert’s best performance in 2024 came in the Open 13 and the Dubai Tennis Championships, where he claimed the title in these two tournaments. He has achieved remarkable victories against Daniil Medvedev, Hubert Hurkacz, and Alexander Bublik in the two title runs. While glory found him in Dubai, it would escape him in the Indian Wells Masters and the Miami Open.

The French player was eliminated in round two of both the Masters 1000 events but will now focus on Monte-Carlo, where he has not managed to win a main draw match yet.

Coria has had a topsy-turvy run so far in 2024. He reached the final of the Piracicaba Challenger and then the semifinal of the Cordoba Open and Argentina Open. Rio Open saw him eliminated in the first round with a second-round exit in the Chile Open. Leading up to the Monte-Carlo masters, he was eliminated in the first round of the Estoril Open.

In Monte-Carlo, the 32-year-old player has played two qualifier matches. He first defeated Alexander Shevchenko in straight sets, followed by defeating Arthur Rinderknech in the second qualifier in three sets.

Humber and Coria have never played against each other on the ATP Tour or the Challenger series. The French and the Argentinian players are going to battle in Monte-Carlo for the first time and will fight harder than usual to overcome the clay court. The audience is bound to be titillated throughout the clash, which will see both players hoping for a win.

Prediction: Ugo Humbert to be the victor

Humbert has yet to win a match in Monte-Carlo. In recent matches, Humbert has won 76%, while Coria has won 62%. Humbert has a solid win percentage on hard courts (66%) which goes below 50 on clay, 49% to be precise. Coria being a renowned clay specialist has a 63% success rate on the surface.

However, The French player climbed to rank 15 after dropping out of the top 100 in 2022. His recent form has also been fantastic, but it has come on hard courts, which can prove to be an advantage for Coria. Regardless of his difficulties on clay, Humbert has amazing momentum, which should set him up for a good win in 3 sets, but he will need to go all guns blazing.
