Stefanos Tsitsipas is looking for his first title of the 2022 season. The young Greek has played well so far in his first clay-court tournament of this season, losing just a solitary set en route to his run to the final. He will lock horns against first-time Masters 1000 finalist, Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the final on Sunday in Monaco.

Fokina is enjoying a dream run himself at the Monte Carlo Masters.  The 22-year-old Spaniard has already caused a major upset in the tournament, defeating Novak Djokovic in three sets in his Round-of-32 clash.

Stefanos Tsitsipas’ run in the 2022 season and in Monte Carlo Tournament

The defending champion bounced back from the brink of a defeat against Diego Schwartzman in the quarterfinal to turn around the tide in his favor. The young Greek was serving for the match in the second set. However, wheels came off for Tsitsipas as he not only squandered the second set but also stared at an agonizing defeat at 0-4 in the third set.

Nonetheless, the defending champion wasn’t willing to throw in the towel and completed a remarkable turnaround to win six games in a row to clinch the deciding set 6-4 against the Argentine. Tsitsipas was clutch and authoritative in his 6-4, 6-2 straight sets victory over Alexander Zverev in the semifinals.

Davidovich Fokina’s dream run at the Monte Carlo Masters

Unseeded Fokina had a dismal start to the 2022 season, suffering multiple first-round exits. However, his performance in the lead-up to the title clash in Principality is nothing short of spectacular. He not only upset Djokovic but also stunned Taylor Fritz and Grigor Dimitrov en route to his run so far at the Monte Carlo Masters.

Nonetheless, this is Spaniard’s first-ever Masters 100 final, and will certainly start as an underdog against the defending champion in the final.

Head To Head

World No.5, Tsitsipas leads Fokina 2-0 so far on the ATP tour. Interestingly, Spaniard had to retire after losing the opening set in their clash at the Monte Carlo Masters last year. Tsitsipas edged past the Spaniard in three sets in their most recent clash in Rotterdam.
