Grigor Dimitrov is back home, playing at the Monte Carlo Masters Cup! The biggest district of the second-smallest country in the world is home to many world-class athletes. Owing to the transitory nature of the ATP tour which sees players constantly moving from one part of the world to the other, Dimitrov enjoys these few weeks of the Masters’ tournament at home.
Playing in Monaco does have its perks. For the Bulgarian, it comes in the form of being able to travel to his home where his mother, Maria Dimitrov lives and the sense of belonging to the breezy landscape that Monaco provides. The added advantage of family doesn’t hurt either!

Talking to the Tennis Channel after his impressive win, the Bulgarian who has been living in Monte Carlo for a long time now, expressed his happiness on being back home, “To be honest, I think the past, the past four days. I mean, I think I’ve slept over eight hours every single night, and, honestly, it’s beautiful. I have my mom around, and, and just. It feels at home. It’s as simple as that.”
Tennis players spend most of their careers on the road or in hotels because of the back-to-back tournaments taking them to different parts of the world. Naturally, they don’t get to spend much time at home, with friends and family. The conversation of striking a balance between their professional and personal life has always been a big part of pro tennis careers. Something which Dimitrov has been vocal about.
“I don’t get the chance to have weeks like that. Usually, I have a week, week and a half before I play the tournament, but so far I haven’t even been home a week. And that’s, that’s something that I’m. I’m, of course, again, I’m building off that. And then I, I keep on building keep on”
Now the principality of Monaco has been a favored town for world-class athletes, mainly tennis players. But what makes it such a preferred place to live among sportspeople?
‘Blessed to train in such conditions’ – Grigor Dimitrov
Arguably the most significant reason is financial. Monaco serves as a tax haven, exempting residents from paying personal income taxes. In tennis, players are subject to taxation based on the country where they compete.

The second reason would be the infrastructure. The amenities at the Monte-Carlo Country Club (MCCC), the prestigious venue for the Monte-Carlo Masters, are more than enviable. Situated just beyond the Principality’s boundaries in Roquebrune Cap-Martin, the club boasts an impressive array of facilities, including 21 clay courts, two indoor courts, two hard courts, and 15 illuminated courts.
The climate is also a draw, as expressed by Dimitrov himself, “We couldn’t be more blessed to train in such conditions” With short winters the weather in Monaco is mild and sunny with moderate temperatures.
