The Miami Open champion, Jannik Sinner, is looking to mark another triumphant run this season at the Monte Carlo Masters. The Italian player, who has now become the new world No. 2, will square off against the German Jan-Lennard Struff for a place in the quarterfinals. Struff, on the other hand, will be aiming to start the clay court season on a high note.

The clay court tournament in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, which is a part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 category, features some players of high caliber. As the likes of Sinner and Struff will be vying for glory at this esteemed Masters 1000 event, it will be interesting to see who comes out on top in this round of 16.

Jannik Sinner vs Jan-Lennard Struff: Monte Carlo Masters round of 16 match preview

The Italian tennis sensation began the 2024 season with a title-winning run at the Australian Open. He also tasted glory at the ATP Rotterdam and Miami Open, winning both tournaments. In Monte Carlo, Jannik Sinner is the number-two seed participant who brushed aside his unseeded opponent, Sebastian Korda, in his opening-round match. During his straight-sets victory, the 22-year-old player hit two aces and one double fault against the American while he had a first-serve win percentage of 95%, which decreased to 57% on the second serve. He also converted 5 out of 12 break points and won 33 receiving points.

Jan-Lennard Struff, on the other hand, has faced a number of initial round defeats at different tournaments, including the Grand Slam in Melbourne. He marked his best campaign at the ATP Rotterdam, where he reached the round of 16. Now entering the Monte Carlo Masters as an unseeded participant, the German player overcame the likes of Sebastian Baez and Borna Coric. In his round-of-32 game, Struff hit 2 aces in the match and five double faults. The former No. 21 player won a brilliant 78% of points on his first serve, and 61% on his second serve. He also won 4 out of 6 break points.

Sinner vs Struff: Head-to-Head

The round of 16 between Jannik Sinner and Jan-Lennard Struff at the Monte Carlo Masters will also mark their second meeting on the men’s tour. Sinner emerged victorious in their previous meeting at this season’s BNP Paribas Open, and he currently has a 1-0 lead in their H2H record. As they have only locked horns on hard courts, things could change this time around on the clay surfaces in Monte Carlo.

Prediction: Sinner to prevail in this R16 in Monte-Carlo

The Italian player is on a roll as he has lost only one match during this entire season while he is currently 23-1 on the tour. In the process, Sinner has defeated some of the top-ranked players, including the 24-time singles Grand Slam champion, Novak Djokovic. As he has won almost thrice as many matches as his upcoming German opponent this season, the new number 2 player will be the favorite to win this R16 in Monte-Carlo. Given his solid 80/45 record on the clay court surfaces, Sinner will clinch a straight-set victory against Struff.
