As curtains drew on the first half of the ‘Sunshine Double’ in Indian Wells, the action has now shifted to the Miami Open. Some of the top tennis stars will battle it out over the next few days in the hope of winning the coveted prize. Although some star players like Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, and Barbora Krejcikova are missing from the tournament this year, nonetheless the field has some exciting young talent to watch out for.

Earlier today, American teenager, Jenson Brooksby was up against Federico Coria of Argentina in the first round of the Miami Open. Although the American won the match, it was not short on controversy. It invited the criticism of the former World Number 1, Caroline Wozniacki.

Caroline Wozniacki wants strict action against Jenson Brooksby for the Miami Open controversy

Jenson Brooksby was involved in a racquet-smashing controversy midway through the third set. He smashed it so hard that it bounced off and nearly hit the ball boy. Subsequently, he received a point penalty for his actions. But the former Australian Open champion, Caroline Wozniacki, wasn’t satisfied with the umpire’s decision. Commentating for Tennis Channel, she said, “This definitely should be a disqualification.”

Further, the American offered an apology after the match. Taking to Instagram, he said, “A lot has been said about my actions on court today. I went on live TV and apologized to all and apologized via the media. I also did meet with the person involved. He took me aside and we had a good chat and I appreciate him doing that. Shouldn’t have happened and I will do my best to learn from this. Thank you for the support.”

Jenson Brooksby eventually prevailed in three sets against Federico Coria 3-6, 6-2, 6-3, in a match lasting just over two hours. Entering the match on the back of a memorable run in Indian Wells, where he knocked out Stefanos Tsitsipas, the American carried his form in Miami, entering the second round.
