The season’s final Major event has begun in New York, and five-time champion Roger Federer was not there for the event. The Swiss was absent from the US Open as well as the entire season preceding it. Berrettini expressed a desire to see Roger Federer return to the tour and face him at least once more.
Federer inspired Matteo Berrettini to become a tennis player
The Italian tennis player was full of praise for Federer, revealing that Federer inspired him to become a tennis player. “The reason why I’m here now is Roger. He was my idol when I was growing up. I was cheering for him. So I want him back really badly,”

He further added, “I think (he) was great, is still great for tennis. He brought tennis to even, like, a higher level, just for the stuff he did on court, off court. Like Serena, I guess, one of a kind, you know?”
He also wished Federer a speedy recovery and expressed a desire to compete against him.
Berrettini defeats Andy Murray to reach the round of 16
Matteo Berrettini advanced to the fourth round of the US Open by winning 6-4, 6-4, 7-6, 6-3 against Andy Murray. Despite missing Wimbledon this year due to Covid, the Italian tennis player was ultimately too powerful and strong for the three-time Major winner.

Murray couldn’t handle his lethal combination of powerful serve, backhand slice, and fierce forehand in the midday sun at Arthur Ashe Stadium. Berrettini, as one of the favorites to win the US Open, was always going to be a tough test. Murray went toe-to-toe with the 26-year-old in the opening exchanges but eventually lost his serve at important points.
