The emotionally charged night in London in 2022, where Roger Federer played his last match, is one to remember for ages. Now, as Federer’s upcoming documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days is all set to give the tennis world a sneak peek of that night, anticipation of it has become higher. On that note, Matteo Berrettini, who was present at the time, ignited more excitement as he shed light on one important piece of advice he had taken from the Swiss Maestro that night.

Matteo Berrettini, who is currently gearing up to win the Stuttgart Open semifinal match scheduled today, recently appeared for an interview. Apart from talking about his ankle injuries, and Roland Garros’ withdrawal, the former World No. 6 had poignant advice to share to the question: “Have you been given any advice about tennis? And how to deal with its pressures that have become valuable life advice as well?”

The Italian player reflected on how his idol, Roger Federer, during his last match at the Laver Cup in 2022, said, “You guys have no idea how lucky you are, that you can keep playing. I would give a lot to just be able to play one more match, have one more win, one more important tournament. So keep enjoying, keep striving. Because this is the best sport ever and you’ve got to enjoy it.”

Apart from adding how he was crying as he was sad about leaving tennis, Berrettini further explained, “And I think that’s when I really understood the power of loving what you do. That it’s in the bad moments and the good moments. It’s just enjoying the ride – I’ve tried to do that since.” If not entirely, Berrettini indeed knows to some extent the pain of staying away from the tennis spotlight. The former World No. 1, Federer, struggled with knee injuries that compelled him to retire. For Berrettini, it was different. Throughout his tumultuous season this year, Berrettini faced the challenge of withdrawing from several tournaments because of his own set of injuries.

It all started at the Australian Open, where he had to withdraw due to a right foot injury. It was only the beginning. His most recent withdrawals from the Italian Open and French Open further added to the challenges. According to him, “The toughest thing, when you’re injured, is that when you don’t play matches for a long time, you have to get used to them again.” However, after a short hiatus, the 28-year-old player is back in the Stuttgart Open, where he has previously won twice. Therefore, the Italian tennis pro’s confidence is also notable.
