Rafael Nadal is probably the greatest player of our time. The Spaniard was trained by his uncle for many years and thus, his unique style could be rightly attributed to his uncle, Toni Nadal’s disciplined training. Recently, his uncle expressed his feelings about his nephew’s performances on the ATP tour this season.

Rafael Nadal was encouraged by his uncle to adopt a left-handed style, despite him being right-handed. Nadal retained his two-handed backhand but developed his signature one-handed forehand, a shot that gave him the edge while on slow surfaces. Nadal has won a record 14 French Open titles and a total of 22 singles Grand Slam titles, the highest in the men’s circuit.

Rafael Nadal fell short of his uncle’s expectations

Nadal, at 36, has been labeled as the oldest champion in Paris in the Open Era with his most recent triumph at Roland Garros. However, Rafael Nadal’s uncle, Toni, isn’t happy with the way things panned out for his nephew. He, unsurprisingly, expected more from his famous and competitive nephew. Toni Nadal is coaching rising Canadian star Felix Auger-Aliassime and is not currently in his nephew’s team.

Toni Nadal believes it has been a frustrating season for Rafael Nadal as traumatic injuries hampered his prospects at Wimbledon and the US Open. During an exclusive interview with Diario AS, he said, “It could have been an extraordinary season, but it has been marred by the continual inconvenience he has had,”. Toni Nadal further added, “The results went well because he won Australia and Roland-Garros, but you leave with a bitter taste in your mouth.”
