Nick Kyrgios’ blistering form in 2022 only intensified the pressure on him ahead of the grand slam in New York. In the round of 16 at the US Open, he defeated defending champion Daniil Medvedev. After a thrilling victory, the Australian is among the favorites to win the US Open.

He has been in fantastic form on the ATP Tour in recent months. He reached a couple of semi-finals in the run-up to Wimbledon. Then he reached the final at Wimbledon, but lost to Novak Djokovic. This form has carried over into the US Open. But now, following his massive victory over defending champion Medvedev, he intends to make it big at the US Open.

Nick Kyrgios knocked out Daniil Medvedev

Kyrgios of Australia knocked defending champion Daniil Medvedev out of the US Open. The world number one from Russia was defeated 7-6(11), 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 by the notorious 23rd-seeded Kyrgios. The Australian is determined to take advantage of the opportunity to win his first grand slam title in New York. He stated, “My team, it’s all my team, I’m working really hard, I hope I can keep it going.”

Kyrgios added, “I don’t want to let them down, I’ve been on the road for four months, we all have families we want to see, I want to make this count.”

The Australian tennis player, who was defeated in the Wimbledon final by Novak Djokovic in July, displayed tenacity and poise to defeat Medvedev in front of a capacity crowd at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. Despite dropping the second set, he came back to dominate Medvedev in the third and fourth sets to win in 2 hours and 53 minutes.

Kyrgios misses his family

Nick Kyrgios shared a heartfelt photo on his social media of his seriously ill mother with the caption, ‘Makes me so sad and so happy at the same time’. The Australian is very close to his family and misses them badly.

Kyrgios also discussed how his desire to win his first grand slam relates to his desire to return home to see his family. A few hours after his victory over Medvedev, which Todd Woodbridge called the “best match of his career,” Kyrgios shared a picture of his seriously ill mother Norlaila on his Instagram, who was lying on a lounge with a blanket over her.

Nick Kyrgios will play against Karen Khachanov in the US Open quarterfinals later today.
