As the tennis season approaches its end, Daniil Medvedev remains committed to his pursuit of the Number 1 ranking. However, he acknowledges that the path to dethroning Novak Djokovic is very difficult. To secure the top spot, Medvedev would need an impressive record, winning all tournaments he enters, while hoping that both Carlos Alcaraz and Djokovic face a series of defeats. It’s a mathematical possibility but a practical challenge.

Medvedev, in a recent interview, suggested that he would be looking to end the year in the Top 2 of the rankings while hoping to launch a quick attack at the start of  2024.

“Wherever I go I’m looking to be a champion, so the dream of being number 1 remains alive. However, I am aware that I am very far away and that my fight must be more trying to finish in the top 2 and stay close to the top to be able to assault it at the beginning of 2024. I don’t think Novak will play too many tournaments, so logic indicates that Carlos Alcaraz would have to finish as number 1 at the end of the year. I’m going to do my best in every tournament I play,” said Medvedev in the interview.

One key factor in this race is Djokovic’s tournament selection. Medvedev believes that Djokovic may not participate in too many tournaments, which could open the door for Carlos Alcaraz to finish the year as number 1.

Thus, the battle to hold the top spot in the ATP rankings is wide open. With Carlos Alcaraz holding the second spot, Medvedev believes that he could end the year on a high and hold the number 1 spot in the ATP rankings. However, the man who holds the second spot currently has already had his sights set on the number 1 spot.

Carlos Alcaraz looks set to grab the first spot from Djokovic in the ATP rankings

After Novak Djokovic took the number 1 spot from Alcaraz in the rankings, the Spaniard made sure to not waste any time and clinch the spot back from him. In an interview, he said that he was looking to grab the number one spot from Novak as soon as possible. However, as Medvedev suggested, Carlos Alcaraz has already set his sights on the number 1 spot.

Thus, with the top spot on the line, it will be interesting to who among the greats will lay their hands on the 1st place. While there are still quite a few tournaments left to happen, the race is wide open. Medvedev will also be looking to close the gap as much as he can so that he can also contest for the top spot by the start of next year.
