Is Jannik Sinner the new king of tennis, or can Carlos Alcaraz dethrone him?

It won’t be an over exaggeration to say that Jannik Sinner is having a dream run in his career. As of now, the world no.1 can’t do anything wrong and whatever he touches is turning to gold. One can can even call him ‘Winner Sinner’ given his indomitable stature on the court, courtesy a phenomenal season in 2024. He not only clinched two Grand Slams this year but also won the ATP Finals title – without losing a single set in Turin! After 38 years, since Ivan Lendl, he’s the first player to achieve this milestone. His supremacy has now compelled Italian legend Adriano Panatta to make a bold claim on the Fox’s sheer dominance. Is there really anyone who can challenge him?

Former ATP pro Adriano Panatta thinks there’s actually no one on planet Earth who can rival Sinner’s talent. According to the former Italian player, he’s never seen anyone like the Fox in the last fifty years. “We should look for an opponent in another galaxy because here on earth there is no one who can worry him. In these 50 years of tennis I have never seen such an evident supremacy over his opponents,” he said in an interview with TuttoSport, dated November 18th.

However, Adriano also thinks that Carlos Alcaraz is, perhaps, the only player who can really pose a threat to Jannik Sinner. But that’s only if the Spaniard can play at his full potential. “At this moment perhaps Alcaraz if he plays at 100% can worry him but Jannik managed to win the Finals without losing a set against the best in the world,” he said. Per Panatta, what really makes the Fox stand out from other best tennis players in the world is his destructive nature that leaves his opponents no chance of coming back. “He comes on the court and starts hammering you from the back of the court, with everything. And with an extraordinary nervous endurance for his age,” said the Italian legend. But this isn’t the first time he’s admired Sinner’s impressive talent.

When Adriano Panatta showered praising words on Jannik Sinner, comparing him to Rafael Nadal

During the ATP Finals in Turin, last week, Sinner was having a blast. When he beat Daniil Medvedev in the group stage, Adriano Panatta couldn’t stop himself from lauding the world no.1’s performance. Moreover, he also compared the 23-year-old to Rafael Nadal while speaking about the Fox’s dominating style on the court. “I don’t remember such dominance. Maybe Nadal had the same impact on clay, but every now and then during the year he stumbled against a world number 20 or 30. Sinner never makes mistakes,” he said. “Such an evident demonstration of superiority is something impressive,” added Panatta.

Moreover, even tennis GOAT and former ATP pro Roger Feder’s ex-coach, Stefan Edberg, believes that Sinner is special. Recently, he expressed his honest thoughts about the Italian’s growing rise in the world of tennis. According to him, Alexander Zverev and the Fox are two of the best players right now. Still, the latter seems to be in a league of his own. “I would say he’s [Sinner] one of the favorites. Zverev has been impressive; you can’t count him out. But I would pick one of the two, with Sinner being the small favorite out of the two,” said Edberg.

Speaking of Jannik Sinner’s 2024 season in a nutshell, he won a total of eight ATP titles. They also include two Grand Slams, namely the Australian Open and the US Open. Moreover, his singles match record of 70-6 in 2024 is something to marvel at. It will be intriguing to see whether he can continue this sensational form in the next season. Do you think he will extend his Grand Slam tally to three with the Australian Open in 2025? Let us know in the comments below.
