Feliciano Lopez, the Spanish tennis professional, still has his love for tennis intact. As he is striving to be a part of events and play some high-caliber matches at the age of 40. Lopez turned pro in the year 1997 and has kept himself alive up till now. And because he has kept himself in the game for so long, he is about to engrave his name on a record of one of the big three players.

The Spaniard is gearing up for the most prestigious event of the grass swing, the Wimbledon championship. He already has started his journey for this season and is looking strong enough to challenge Roger Federer’s Wimbledon-based record.

A golden opportunity for Feliciano Lopez

Lopez, if successfully qualifies, will play his 81st Grand Slam on the greens of London. Hence, bringing his total Grand Slam appearance to a tie with the 20 times Grand Slam champion Roger Federer. And sharing the record of maximum participation in the main draws of Grand Slam with the Swiss legend.

In addition, Federer cannot further his numbers. As he is to miss the coming Wimbledon championship as well as the US Open owing to the time required for recovery of his knee injury. Therefore, if the Spaniard fails to qualify for the Wimbledon championship, he will still have a chance to even the scores by playing in the main draws of the US Open.

Further up till now, Lopez has tested his skills in the grass courts of two ATP events. The first one being a run till the third round at the Stuttgart Open, an ATP 250 event. And the second was the recent Queen’s club championship, where he failed to climb up to the main draws.

The Streak which ended

Recently the former World No.12 played in the qualifiers of the French Open, hoping to enter the main draws. But unfortunately failed to secure a win against Gian Marco Moroni despite being seeded no.4 in the qualifiers.

Feliciano Lopez’s loss against the Italian came as a shock to the fans, not only because his run in the red dirt of the French Open ended early. But also because of his streak of appearing in the main draws of 79 consecutive Grand Slam ended. Notably, his steak started in the year 2002 French Open and ended in 2022 French Open.
