The new World no.1, Daniil Medvedev, had quite a day yesterday. After Novak Djokovic’s loss in the Dubai Open, the Russian player got the news that he will become the new no.1 ranked player on Monday. Later, he also won his quarter-final match at Acapulco to set a semi-final clash against Rafael Nadal.

Usually, Daniil doesn’t react much whether he wins or loses. Even after winning his first Grand Slam in New York, his reaction was rather tame. So, how did Daniil react to the whole news? Daniil’s coach, Gilles Cervara, talked about his player’s reaction after becoming the new no.1.

Yesterday, at the Dubai Open, Novak Djokovic lost his quarter-final match against Jiri Vesely. After losing that match, it was evident that Daniil will become the new no.1 tennis player in the world. In an interview, Gilles Cervara talked about Daniil’s reaction after hearing the good news. According to him, Medvedev was pretty relaxed at Acapulco and focused on winning the tournament.

“How did Daniel react? He is focused on the upcoming match, leave him alone (smile). It’s just amazing. Historical. Glad it hits us. I never would have imagined that. But it was inscribed in us without our knowing it. It’s something that we had never talked about, except, necessarily, at the concrete approach of the goal. I think he can settle in this place because he has acquired the dimension he deserves. Now he has to take it,” Cervara said (Google Translate).

Daniil’s next match is against Rafael Nadal

It seemed like the news about becoming World no.1 didn’t affect Daniil that much. In the quarter-final match in Acapulco, he eased past Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets, winning by 6-2,6-3. The Russian will now face Rafael Nadal in the semi-final, which will be a rematch of their Australian Open finals clash.
