American ATP stars made headlines at the recently finished US Open 2024, as Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe caught the most attention. Ben Shelton, however, wasn’t lucky enough to cherish the big moments. But he has put the disappointment aside already and now has his eyes set on the Laver Cup in Berlin. As Team World’s line-up is creating hype on social media, the youngster couldn’t hold back the excitement within.

Amid the anticipation of the event, Shelton expressed his excitement with an Instagram story. The caption read, “Time to go make it happen! See y’all in Berlin.” The 21-year-old shared a montage of his memorable moments from last year’s Laver Cup, where he made a remarkable debut for Team World in Vancouver. Shelton didn’t drop a set and contributed a vital six points to secure Team World’s victory.

Ben Shelton has quickly established himself as one of the brightest talents in tennis, despite having turned professional only two years ago. The youngster achieved a career-high ranking of 13 and claimed his second ATP title in Houston by taking down his teammate Frances Tiafoe in the final. Shelton also had a remarkable run at Wimbledon this year, appearing in three five-set matches to reach the fourth round for the first time.

Even after such a short experience as a pro, Shelton has already experienced the thrill of the Laver Cup. Reflecting on last year’s experience, he said, “It was special for me being a part of it for the first time last year, getting the nod from John McEnroe. It’s just an iconic event… to be a part of it, feel that team energy and atmosphere, it’s been really cool for me, and I’m excited again to be on the team this year.”

The Laver Cup is more than just another tournament for the 21-year-old. It’s an opportunity to be part of something bigger, and to live his passion for team events. Led by captain John McEnroe, Team World will be counting on Shelton’s big-serving power and confidence to help them continue their winning streak as they face off against Europe’s finest in Berlin, aiming for their third consecutive title.

While Team World has the services of quite a few American stars, Team Europe will be represented by some big names as well and it won’t be easy by any means for Team World to replicate last year’s feat.

Team Europe has assembled a powerful lineup this year. Although Rafael Nadal, who was going to be the main highlight of this year’s event, announced his withdrawal, other superstars will add weight to the team. Australian Open finalist Daniil Medvedev, world No. 6 Alexander Zverev, and the Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz are set to lead the charge for Europe.

Captain Bjorn Borg has picked these top names for his six-man squad as he is determined to reclaim the Laver Cup after last year’s defeat.
